Schedule of Events for The Wall That Heals Exhibit

(Note: Because of the large crowd expected during this four-day event, overflow parking will be available in the ZINC’S parking lot across Highway 176 from campus. Shuttles will run throughout the day between ZINC’S and the Hodge parking lot adjacent to the Wall.)

Tuesday, April 15

11:30 p.m. – Members of Patriot Guard Riders, Rolling Thunder and ABATE of South Carolina meet in the Ingles parking lot in Landrum (Exit 1 off I-26). Motorcyclists prepare to escort The Wall That Heals.

12:30 p.m. – The 73-foot truck carrying The Wall That Heals arrives at Ingles.

1:30 p.m. – Convoy departs for Highway 14 to Highway 176 to East Campus Boulevard.

2:30 p.m. – The convoy is expected to arrive on the USC Upstate campus and will be greeted by 15 cadets from the Air Force Junior ROTC program and the campus community.

Wednesday, April 16

All Day – The Wall That Heals and its accompanying Museum and Information Center will be unpacked and set up on the Quad behind the Administration Building.

  • The Incident Command Center, First Aid Center, and Port-A-Lets will be set up along the Hodge Parking Lot.
  • The Military History Club of Carolinas (MHCC) will deliver vintage military vehicles to Quad for exhibit.
  • Hospitality Tent opened on the Quad.

Thursday, April 17

All Day: Parking in the Hodge lot near Admin will be restricted for handicapped, bus and general parking for visitors to the Wall That Heals. Overflow parking is available along East Campus Blvd. and across Hwy. 176 at Zinc’s – shuttle service will be provided.

10:00 a.m. – Opening Ceremonies will include the National and Service Anthems by the Spartanburg High School Band under the direction of Kevin Horton.

  • National and state colors will be posted by Spartanburg High School Junior ROTC and service flags will be posted by SC State Guard, 2nd Highland Brigade.
  • Laying of the Wreath will be by American Legion Post 28 in Spartanburg, American Legion Post 200 in Boiling Springs, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 3 in Spartanburg, Marine Corps League Detachment 1134 in Spartanburg, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9539 in Roebuck.

12:00 Noon – Reading of South Carolina soldiers names followed by Taps 

2:00 p.m. – Parking in Hodge parallel to Rotary Peace Park is closed until 7:00 p.m. to accommodate the Peace Park Dedication and Business After Hours.

4:45 p.m. – Dedication of the Rotary International Peace Park at USC Upstate

5:00 p.m. – Spring Fest Student Celebration (student event, not open to the public)
Amphitheatre in Susan Jacobs Arboretum

5:30 p.m. – Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours (not open to the public)
Lower Hodge Parking Lot, across from Rotary Peace Park

7:00 p.m. – Nurses in Vietnam Discussion, moderated by Dr. Marsha Dowell. Panelists include: Lt. (Ret). Brenda Jansons, Mr. Bill Koehler, Catherine Talley, associate professor of nursing at USC Upstate; and Ms. Elsie Wright

Film Presentation of Vietnam Nurses, narrated by Dana Delany of China Beach, Campus Life Center Ballroom

Friday, April 18

All Day: Parking in the Hodge lot near Admin will be restricted for handicapped, bus and general parking for visitors to the Wall That Heals. Overflow parking is available along East Campus Blvd. and across Hwy. 176 at Zinc’s – shuttle service will be provided.

12:00 Noon – Reading of South Carolina soldiers names followed by Taps  

1:00-4:00 p.m. – International Peace Symposium, Campus Life Center Ballroom  

5:00 p.m. – White Table Ceremony narrated by Larry Budowski and assisted by the Broome High School Junior ROTC

Saturday, April 19

All Day: Overflow parking is available along East Campus Blvd. and across Hwy. 176 at Zinc’s – shuttle service will be provided.

12:00 Noon – Reading of South Carolina soldiers names followed by Taps

5:00 p.m. – Military Honors Flag Folding Demonstration by the South Carolina State Guard, 2nd Highland Brigade

Military Honors Flag Retirement Ceremony by the South Carolina State Guard, 2nd Highland Brigade

The Military Honors Flag folding will consist of:

  • 7 man rifle team (3 Volleys)
  • 1 Bugler (Taps and Retreat)
  • 3 man Flag Folding Team
  • 1 Duty, Honor, Country presenter
  • 1 Flag Presentor (Chaplin)
  • 1 Officer in Charge (Commander)
  • 1 AOC (Deputy Commander)

 The Military Honors Flag Retirement Ceremony will consist of:

  • Opening by LT Colonel Ballard C. Brown, 2nd Bde Honors Detachment Commander.
  • All Military Service Flags (and MIA Flag) presented with individual Service Song played by Bugler.
  • Presentation of a worn out US Flag
  • The cutting out of the Blue Field and reason why.
  • The cutting out of the individual stripes and noting which of the original 13 states they represent.
  • All parts of the Flag will be placed in a metal container, as removed, and burned with the playing of "The National Anthem" by our Bugler at the conclusion.
  • Conclusion and closing.

Attending civilians present will be asked to participate in certain stages of the Flag Retirement. 

Sunday, April 20

All Day: overflow parking is available along East Campus Blvd. and across Hwy. 176 at Zinc’s – shuttle service will be provided.

5:00 p.m. – Closing Ceremonies

  • Musical Performance by the University Chamber Choir
  • Retirement of Colors by the Dorman High School Junior ROTC
  • Bagpiper rendition of Amazing Grace by Ron Hamilton
