A Welcome From the Dean
Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Carolina Upstate. The College is the largest academic unit on campus, featuring nearly 20 majors across numerous departments, centers, and programs.

I am very excited about what is going on in the College of Arts and Sciences for several reasons.
First, our outstanding faculty and staff are intensely dedicated to their students and the overall teaching mission of the University. Faculty members teach and mentor students by providing them with the latest research, knowledge, and thinking in each field or discipline. The College environment is positive and collaborative, one that facilitates the exploration of challenging issues that confront all of us in the 21 st Century.
Second, the departments, centers, and programs across the College offer an extraordinary range of courses and other learning opportunities. Faculty members are likewise engaged in exceptional scholarship and creative activities related to these activities. Students are well-prepared in their chosen field of endeavor by graduation day. They are also broadly educated, able to communicate, reason, create, and analyze in a way that will make them knowledgeable and productive citizens in a changing world.
Third, faculty, students, and staff at USC Upstate truly make a difference in our metropolitan region. In addition to engaging in important scholarship and learning, we are a community involved in significant outreach and service initiatives. Part of our mission statement states that “faculty members and students explore complex issues, increase knowledge, enhance artistic expression, discover more about themselves and the human condition, and improve local and global communities for all citizens.” Whether engaging in a service learning opportunity, disseminating knowledge on environmental health, teaching elementary school children about theatre, connecting local or global institutions to Internet resources, or volunteering in the community, USC Upstate’s people make a difference. It is another ingredient that makes this a very special place.
