Languages, Literature, and Composition Study Abroad Experiences for Summer 2009
Italy, France, Monaco, and Spain--Maymester 2009
All students who qualify for the Honor's Program (3.2 GPA) may participate in the Maymester 2009 Tour of Europe from the French Alps to the Riviera. Students may join the tour purely for the experience of travel abroad or may enroll in the course associated with the tour for 3 or 6 credits of Honor's English or other independent study credit. Students who enroll in the English course will read selected texts by expatriate British and American authors living and writing in these countries. Students will attend an introductory lecture before the trip. During the trip, students will keep a journal, and after the trip write a paper summarizing their impressions of the literature after seeing the sites in which they were written. Students who take the course for 6 credits will be required to do all the above, read a critical book and write an additional paper.
Trip Details:
- The 14-day tour will begin in Milan--home of Michelangelo’s Last Supper, the second largest cathedral in Europe, and one of the most famous and glamorous shopping streets in the world. The second day, students will leave for the Italian Rivera and spend a few days on the beaches of Cinque Terre, a series of five picaresque towns located on the Bay of Genoa.
- On the fourth day students will journey to France, in the footsteps of the rich and famous who vacation in the city of Nice. While there students will visit one of the world’s tiniest but most beautiful countries—Monaco. Monaco is famous for winding hillside roads dotted with mansions, a fabulous view of the Mediterranean, and of course the Monte Carlo Casino.
- After Nice, students will travel through the French Alps to the ski resort Chamonix in the shadow of Mont Blanc. After two days, students will stop first in the wine country of Dijon, then arrive in the City of Lights, Paris.
- The tour will end in Barcelona, the colorful and dynamic Spanish city filled with flower stalls, puppeteers, restaurants, and views of the Atlantic
- The cost of the tour is based on the number of participants. The base tour price for twenty participants is $2950. The price for 25 participants is $2795, for 30 participants $2675 and for 35 participants--$2585. Participants also pay $447 for departure fees (including airport taxes). This price includes airfare, lodging, breakfast and dinner, and transportation (buses, ferries, chunnels), charter bus, multilingual tour guide, and entry fees into the various museums or excursions. On the four day cruise, all meals are included. Additional costs for the 3 or 6 credit course are based on the current USC Upstate tuition schedule.
- During the fall semester students pay a $95 deposit to apply. The remainder of trip fees are due on January 25th 2009. Students who apply after January 25th pay a $95 late fee. Students who take the course for credit pay the tuition upon registering for Maymester.
- All honors students and those eligible to be honors students (3.2 GPA) are welcome. Students may also invite friends and family to join the tour. Anyone over 23 must pay a $415 adult supplement, guaranteeing a semi private room.

Summer Study in Spain--Various Sessions May-July 2009
Programs range from 6-8 credits at one of 7 universities in Spain. Program fee includes: tuition, on-site orientation, airport reception, mobile phone, online services, student services, social and cultural activities, directors and staff, housing, meals and laundry, medical and life insurance, and six excursions. Program choices include the following:
University of Seville in Seville, Spain (6 credits): Students in 200-300 level Spanish, May 22-early July. $3,950.
University of Granada in Granada, Spain (6 credits): Students at all levels, May 24-early July. $3,750.
University of Salamanca in Salamanca, Spain: Students at all levels, late May-early July; mid-June-late July. $3,900. Price subject to change.
University of Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain: For 8 credits, early June-late July. $5,000. For 6 credits, June 20-July 30. $4,250. Price subject to change.
University of the Basque Country in Bilbao, Spain (6 credits): Students at all levels, with studio art class required. Focus on Contemporary Spanish Art History, June-late July. $4,300. Price subject to change.
University of Cádiz in Cádiz, Spain: Students in 200-level and higher Spanish, June-late July. $3,950.

Previous Study Abroad Programs
German as a Foreign Language at Hochschule Magdeburg-Stendal--Summer I 2008 (dates TBA)
Study at the German Summer School at the Fachhochschule Magdeburg-Stendal in the beautiful German state of Saxony-Anhalt. Over the four-week course, students participate in a German language and culture course while receiving university credit and gaining the experience of living and studying in a German university setting. Students also enjoy a variety of cultural excursions and side trips to Berlin, Potsdam, the Harz Mountains, Wittenberg, a Volkswagen factory tour in Wolfsburg, the Buchenwald concentration camp and Dresden.
Cost: $2800 (This price may be lower, depending on the number of students going and airfare prices). Students who wish to travel on their own to Magdeburg may do so and meet the rest of the students and the instructor in Berlin (program cost: $1800-1850).
Includes:
- 6 credit hours
- Airfare
- All side trips including accommodations and transportation
- One month travel ticket for buses and trams in Magdeburg
- Students must enroll in SGRM 250 in Summer I.

In the Footsteps of the Odyssey--Maymester 2008
All students who qualify for the Honor's Program (3.2 GPA) may participate in the Maymester 2008 Tour of Europe, following in the footsteps of Homer's Odyssey and Virgil's Aeneid. Students may join the tour purely for the experience of travel abroad or may enroll in the course associated with the tour for 3 or 6 credits of Honor's English or other independent study credit. Students who enroll in the English course will read the Odyssey and Aeneid, and attend an introductory lecture before the trip. During the trip, students will keep a journal, and after the trip write a paper summarizing their impressions of the epics after seeing the sites in which they were written. Students who take the course for 6 credits will be required to do all the above, read a critical book on the epics and write an additional paper.
Trip Details:
- The 17-day tour will begin in the ancient city of Athens--site of the Acropolis and the 2005 Olympic games. The second day, students will board a cruise ship for a four-day cruise of the Mediterranean, stopping in the ports of Kusadasi (Turkey), Patmos, Rhodes, Mykonos, Cyprus, and Santorini. Students will see the site of Troy, the ancient ruins of Ephesus (where Paul preached) and the site of Patmos, where John wrote the Book of Revelations.
- After the four-day cruise, students will travel to Delphi, home of the ancient oracles and site of the ancient city of Corinth. From Delphi, students will go to Meteroa, known for ancient monasteries that are built directly into giant, mountain size rocks.
- From Meteroa, the tour will take a night ferry to Italy, beginning on the island of Sicily and the ancient cities of Taormina (home of Mount Etna), and Agriegento (580 BCE city and home of the Valley of the Temples).
- From Sicily, students will go up the Italian coast to Sorrento, one of the most popular beach resorts in Italy. While in Sorrento students will visit the Isle of Capri where the Roman emperors used to vacation. Leaving Capri, the group will stop in the famous ancient city of Pompeii that was covered with volcanic ash in 79 CE—and is the most perfectly preserved Roman towns in existence.
- The finale of our tour will be the Eternal City of Rome, including the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, the Coliseum, the Forum.

Study Abroad Program in France: Paris, Normandy, and Brittany--Maymester 2008
A French Maymester trip to Paris, Normandy and Brittany allows students to earn three to six credit hours in French or International Studies. The trip is open to everyone, including non-French students and faculty. The itinerary includes four days in Paris and trips to Rouen, Normandy, Caen, Mont St. Michel, Rennes, Chartres and optional trips to Versailles and the Louvre.
