Our Herstory...
Established at USC Upstate in October, 1998, The Center for Women's and Gender Studies (CWGS) is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, with a strong connection to and support from the Division of Student Affairs. The CWGS serves students, faculty, staff and community members through curricular and co-curricular programming, resource and referral services, advocacy efforts, and training activities on women- and gender-related issues. As part of the USC Upstate commitment to recognizing and supporting diversity efforts on campus, the Center for Women's and Gender Studies promotes a safe and healthy university environment by creating and enhancing leadership opportunities, personal growth, and professional development for women in our campus community. In an effort to educate more fully our university constituents, the CWGS provides resources and support services relating to women's issues and serves as the coordinating site for the USC Upstate Women's Studies academic program.
The Center for Women's and Gender Studies serves all members of the campus community. While we focus on women's and gender issues and experiences, the Center is open to both men and women, and serves those with formal and informal connections to the University. We recognize that there is no one "women's" experience, and strive to address and celebrate the diversity among women, and the commonalities that we share.
The Center also offers its support to the student organization Upstate Feminists, whose mission is to raise consciousness on campus about the relevance of feminism to college-age men and women. For more information about this organization, contact club president Erica Horne or faculty advisor Lisa Johnson.
