Welcome from Dean Charles Love
As dean of the School of Education at the University of South Carolina Upstate, I welcome your interest in a career in education. I am an educator by training, and it is clear to me that in an age where knowledge provides a competitive advantage, the future growth and development of our nation will be determined by the quality of human skills, capacities, and values nurtured by our nation's teachers and educators.
Our mission in the School of Education at USC Upstate is to prepare educators for this exacting, yet critical challenge. We offer high quality, rich and comprehensive undergraduate and graduate degrees for the preparation of teachers and educators for positions of leadership in education and human development.
Our teacher preparation programs, which represent the core of our mission, have been recognized as among the strongest in the nation. Our teacher education program is approved by the South Carolina Department of Education and accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
These agencies serve to (1) assure the public that we offer a program for the preparation of teachers that meets national standards of quality and excellence; (2) to insure that children and youth are served by well-prepared school personnel; and (3) to advance the teaching profession through the improvement of teacher education programs.
A distinguishing feature of the School of Education is that we constantly challenge our students to confront theory with practice and to understand and master the wide range of interpersonal and analytical skills necessary to be effective teachers and leaders. Accordingly, our teacher preparation programs comprise a wide diversity of field and clinical experiences in public schools, private organizations, and state and federal educational agencies.
