This teaching unit is designed for middle level
students grades seven or eight. It is an English Language Arts unit, but can
easily be used in social studies as well.
The length of this unit is approximately two weeks. Of
course this depends on the level of your students and other variables.
Most of the materials needed are provided either in
the form of graphic organizers, websites, rubrics, etc. The teacher will need
to provide copies of the book Farewell to
Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston & James D. Houston. Also, access
to computers with Internet capability is necessary. Ideally, a lab situation
would be best so that all students can work at the same time to complete the
activities.
