Lesson procedure:

After reading chapter one of Farewell to Manzanar, students will consider and discuss Mama’s question “What is Pearl Harbor?” The students will then complete a KWL chart on the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This should be done as whole-class discussion.

After completion of the KW part of the KWL chart, students will view a PowerPoint presentation on the bombing of Pearl Harbor. As they watch and listen they should make notes in the last column of the KWL chart.  Have students work in small  groups or pair them up to discuss what they learned from the presentation. Bring students back together as a whole class to discuss what was learned from the PowerPoint. Complete the KWL chart as a whole class.

Upon completion of the KWL chart and discussion, the students will complete the graphic organizer (with a partner or independently) noting the causes and effects of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Independent Writing Assignment:

Imagine that you are a Japanese-American living on the coast of California in December, 1941. Write a letter to a relative living on the East Coast of the United States describing the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the effect it is having on you and your family. Be sure to use your KWL chart and your cause/effect graphic organizer for accurate details. Your paper will be assessed according to the writing rubric.
