Lesson Procedure:

Before reading chapters 2-6 of Farewell to Manzanar, students read Executive Order 9066. Have students take notes on the text using the Questions to Guide Student Understanding. Next, discuss in small groups what they think this means. Complete with a whole-class discussion to check student understanding. Students should read chapters 2-6 of Farewell to Manzanar. As they read, they should pay particular attention to descriptions of living conditions in the internment camp. Use the graphic organizer to help students record what they learn about the living conditions. Assessment of student understanding may be made informally during the classroom discussion or by the answers provided on the completed guide to student understanding question sheet. The completed graphic organizer on the living conditions at Manzanar may be used to assess student understanding of the text.
