Introduction

Soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941,  President Roosevelt declared war on Japan. The United States now entered World War II. On February 19, 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which allowed military leaders to exclude people from declared military areas. This began the romoval of approximately 120,000 Japanese-Americans from the Pacific Coast. Was this a military neccesity?

Upon completion of this WebQuest, you will answer the question “Was the Japanese internment justified or an injustice?”

  1. Visit the recommended web sites to gather your information. Make sure you are thinking about the information from the viewpoint of your assigned role. You will have two class periods to research.
  2. Gather your information and use it to prepare your argument. Be sure to include visuals. You might want to prepare poster-sized graphic organizers, maps, diagrams, or even a PowerPoint presentation to present the support for your viewpoint. You will have two class periods to prepare your presentation.
  3. Your group will have one class period in which to present your position. Justified or Injustice? Your task is to persuade the other group that your position is valid based upon the events and the time period.

Conclusion

Now that you have looked at the information from the viewpoints of those involved, either the frightened natural American citizens or the humiliated Japanese-American citizens, it is easier to understand how such a tragedy in our history could occur. Use the insight you have gained from reading Farewell to Manzanar, the text of your research, and the many primary sources you have accessed to think about injustices you may have witnessed. What effect does stereotyping and prejudice have on an individual? How does racial prejudice affect the lives of those who experience it? How does our society perpetuate a feeling of prejudice toward various ethnic groups?

Go to the following website and read President Gerald Ford’s satement known as Proclamation 4417.

We as American people learned from our mistakes and promise that we shall never again repeat them.
