Objective:   

 

1.     To define and find the 6th grade mathematical concepts of mean, median, mode, and range through the use of technology. 

 

2.  To complete a bar and line graph using two MLB statistics and two mathematical

     concepts of their choice.

Notebook paper

Procedures:

 

Students will complete the Field of Dreams Ö An American Past time and Math WebQuest.  Students will discover the history of baseball through the American Memories and Library of Congress websites.  First, students will investigate mean, median, mode, and range through an interactive math web activity online.  After completing both activities, the students will write a brief summary about the steps they used to find each mathematical concept.  Next, students will discover the statistics of Hall of Fame MLB players, Hank Aaron, Ty Cobb, Jackie Robinson, and Ted Williams.  They will determine the mean, median, mode, and range of each playersí statistics.  After completing this step the students will pick three of their favorite MLB players, who have played at least five years  and locate their statistics.  Again, they will determine the mean, median, mode, and range of each playersí statistics.  Upon completion of these two steps, the students will create a bar and line graph of their findings.  They will choose two statistics and only two mathematical concepts to display in their graphs along with a one page typed summary of their findings and what they predict their favorite playersí statistics will be next season.  Finally, the students will present their findings to the whole class in a brief presentation.

 

Evaluation:

 

1.     Students will be able to define and find the mathematical concepts of mean, median, mode, and range through the use of technology.

 

2.     Students will be able to complete a bar and line graph using two MLB statistics and two mathematical concepts of their choice.
