Evening Program in Elementary Education
with Optional Add-On Learning Disabilities Certification

In the summer of 2006, USC Upstate began a new initiative called the Teacher Assistant Merged Program and is now known as the Evening Elementary Program.  The purpose of the program is to provide a venue for teacher assistants and career changers to gain certification necessary to teach in public schools while maintaining his/her daytime job.  The program has a dual path – first, an individual who currently holds a bachelor’s degree, but not in education, may earn certification, and secondly, an individual who has significant coursework towards a degree may earn a Bachelor of Science degree in teaching.

Candidates will take two courses each fall and spring and be enrolled in at least 3 classes over the summer.  The classes are being offered at the University Center in Greenville, at the USC Upstate Campus in Spartanburg, and at the USC Sumter campus in the evenings to accommodate individuals who are working during the day.

Several Spartanburg School Districts, along with the Greenville County Schools, have agreed to participate in the program. Most of the participating school districts have agreed to reimburse teacher assistants for part of the costs for taking the required coursework.   At the present time, there are two cohorts of teacher assistants enrolled in the program - the first cohort began in Greenville at the University Center, summer of 2006, and is student teaching in the spring of 2009. The second cohort began at the Spartanburg Campus in fall of 2006.   A second cohort for the Greenville and Sumter campuses is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2009.
