Julia Blandin, '06
She hasn’t been an alumna for very long, but in a few short years, marketing major Julia Blandin has obtained her masters degree, landed a great job with Fluor Corporation and bought a house!
Just 23, this 2006 graduate feels that her courses and professors at USC Upstate prepared her well for her career. Upstate, she says, was a diverse environment, similar to her new work environment where she interacts with people from around the world including Europe, Canada, Puerto Rico and Dubai.
At Fluor, Blandin is a marketing specialist in the client relations and events department. Her daily duties include Fluor tradeshow asset operations, which means that she is responsible for shipping, warehousing, installation, dismantling and furnishings for domestic and international trade shows. She is also involved with Fluor’s marketing communications department in developing the company Web site. Fluor Corporation is one of the world’s largest publicly owned engineering, procurement, construction, and maintenance service companies.
Blandin’s participation in women’s basketball, from 2002 to 2006, was a highlight of her college experience. She served as team captain for her junior and senior years, served three years on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, and was a member of the team that made it to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 11 years. “I loved all my teammates,” she says, “and it was great coming in to college and knowing that you will automatically have 11 new sisters.”
Several faculty and staff members stand out in Blandin’s memory as well. Dr. Frank Rudisill was Blandin’s organizational behavior professor, and “he taught a lot about how the real world works.” Consumer behavior professor, Dr. Steve Caldwell, imparted much information that Blandin says was useful for graduate school and her career. Dr. Faruk Tanyel, her marketing professor, “really pushed me…he always made me think strategically and not just on the surface.” And Betty Guzzo of the Career Center helped Blandin pull her resume together and conducted mock interviews.
Originally from Greenville, Blandin now resides in Mauldin and is very involved with her church, Bethlehem Baptist in Simpsonville, where she serves on the Helping Hands Ministry and the College Connection Ministry. Her hobbies include watching movies, travelling, cooking, attending sporting events and learning new home improvement techniques.
