Tameca L. Smith, '07

Tameca, a native of Mauldin, S.C., graduated from USC Upstate in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, with a concentration in accounting. She notes that the business courses at the University assisted her in passing the PHR examination. USC Upstate also prepared her in understanding how business units work, and with her accounting background she is more focused on the bottom objective, making profit and contributing to her organization’s goal in the HR function.

Tameca says that she was “an average student who always looked for opportunities. I was very focused on school regarding my academics but more so on my career opportunities.” Her fondest memory at USC Upstate was spending time and bonding with her line sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. “We had lots of fun, mostly partying. I gained lifelong friends through my sorority and we have helped each other develop into the ladies we are today.”

In the three years since Tameca Smith graduated from USC Upstate, she has accomplished all of the goals in her three-year plan. Shortly after graduation she started an internship program at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, in the second week of her internship she was in session with the director of human resources, vice president of human resources, and the chief financial officer discussing strategic HR plans. After completing the program, she started her career at Charter Communications in human resources and she is still employed there.

“My three-year plan was to complete college, have a career in HR, complete my dual masters in HR management and HR development, become certified in human resources, and move from an entry level position. As of today, all of those goals were accomplished on time.”

Sherry McAdams and Dr. Steven Yates left lasting impressions on Smith. She recalls McAdams was a great support system throughout her studies. Also, while interning at Deloitte in Charlotte, she was very home-sick. Dr. Yates came by her job and took her to lunch, and she says that his act of kindness spoke volumes; the faculty at USC Upstate was cheering for her and counting on her to be successful.

In her spare time, Smith finds enjoyment in interior decorating and event planning. She owns her own event planning company, Adore Events. In the community, she’s involved in the Greenville Society for Human Resource Management, Greenville SHRM Chapter; and she’s active with getting unemployed individuals ready for employment.

Smith ends with this quote: “I am a believer that if you write your goals down, you will accomplish them. I look at my list everyday and am amazed at all that I have accomplished.”
