Now in its second year of existence, the track and field program is looking to continue to build upon the new foundation of excellence under head coach Jimmy Stephens. Last season, the men finished sixth and the women eighth at the Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships, highlighted by many new individual firsts, personal records and accomplishments. Freshman Kendra Wallace hit a 3-pointer from the left side with eight seconds left to close within three points, but the USC Upstate women's basketball team wasn't able to force a turnover and Mercer's Nicole Leonard swished the back end of her double bonus free throws with 2.6 seconds left to ice a 79-75 win at Mercer's University Center in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both teams. Playing on the largest stage of her career last Tuesday, junior Courtney Hawkins (Greer, S.C./Greer) gave one of her finest performances as she scored 22 points to lead the USC Upstate women's basketball team to a come-from-behind 73-63 win over IUPUI at Conseco Fieldhouse, the home of the NBA's Indiana Pacers and the WNBA's India Fever. For her efforts in the game, Hawkins earned the Atlantic Sun Conference's Player of the Week award, the conference office in Macon, Ga., announced Monday. MORE [+]
