Life Cycle Refresh (LCR) FAQs
Do Macs receive the same support as PCs?
The USC Upstate Help Desk cannot repair Apple MacBook Pro hardware-related issues. Apple requires service locations to be certified warranty repair centers and the Help Desk is not currently acertified hardware repair center. Extended repair times should be expected for hardware issues with Apple products as MacBooks with hardware issues have to be sent off-site.
How do I request a high-end laptop?
Any employee who wishes to have an upgraded laptop must work with their chair, director, dean or vice chancellor to request the higher end laptop. The chair, director, dean or vice chancellor can email lvanwingerden@uscupstate.edu with budget information to be charged, along with additional department cost for the upgrade to a higher end laptop.
What will happen with my current computer?
ITS will be exchanging the new laptop for the laptop listed above. This one-to-one exchange will ensure that we are keeping the number of models on campus to a minimum which will allow the Help Desk to increase the support offered as well as the turn around time when offering support.
How much time will it take to get my new laptop?
We ask that users come to the Help Desk to exchange their laptop during the deployment window because we have tools and resources available here that will allow our technicians to quickly and accurately copy your data.
The actual time the upgrade will take depends solely on how much data you have to be copied from your old laptop to the new laptop. ITS has spent numerous hours optimizing the image (software on the computer) and the process of copying users data and profiles from their old computer to the new one to ensure we are as efficient, effective and conscious of your time.
Will training be provided?
ITS will communicate several training classes that will focus on Windows 7, Office 2010 and other features of the new laptop you’re receiving including webcam, included software or other tools. This training will not be required but is recommended to ensure you know about the features your laptop provides.
Can I purchase my old laptop for personal use?
Unfortunately, due to state regulations we have to send all retired technology equipment to state surplus.
What about my accessories?
ITS does not pay for or replace employee monitors, docking stations, keyboards, mice or other peripheral hardware. The “E” series laptops being deployed will not work with the existing “D” series docking stations. Computer vendors change the docking station connectors every 3-5 years so new docking stations will have to be purchased if desired. Users do not have to have docking stations to connect peripheral hardware, it is only a convenience. Below is the accessory price list.
| Accessories | Price |
| Docking Station | $180.00 |
| 19" Monitor | $130.00 |
| 22" Monitor | $165.00 |
| 24" Monitor | $245.00 |
| Mouse | $10.00 |
| Keyboard | $10.00 |
