The Promise of Opportunity: Hopes and Dreams Fulfilled
Your gift will continue to foster an environment that supports every student’s chance to succeed.
For senior Daphnie Glenn, choosing to attend USC Upstate was initially based on the fact that her mother’s health was not good, so she did not want to go far from her Greenville home.
In high school, her Youth Leadership Greenville group had been encouraged to explore college opportunities in the Upstate, stressing the importance of building up the community. Factoring in her mother’s health situation with her desire to attend college, Glenn discovered that USC Upstate“was as close and as far as I needed it to be.”
When she arrived on campus her freshman year, however, Glenn knew she had made the right choice.
“I have been blessed to meet great people to help me along,”says Glenn. “My mentor, Assistant Director of Student Life Stacy Mills, has been there to listen, give advice, open my eyes to bigger things around me, and help me make sure I reach my goals. He’s also an alumnus and shared with me how much Upstate meant to him.”
While Glenn’s collegiate journey has provided her with examples of what it means to set goals, strive to achieve them, and succeed in making a difference, she admits that the most rewarding aspect is “our belief in giving back.”
“When I was in need, I had individuals I could go to who gave to me out of the kindness of their hearts,” says Glenn. “It means a lot to me, and I am forever grateful.”
Achieving her goals has been important to Glenn, but being on a campus where the culture is to ensure you have every opportunity to succeed has been vital to her fulfilling her dreams.
“I realized I had made the right decision to attend USC Upstate after I arrived on campus my freshman year and everyone helped me move in and pointed me in the right direction, literally and figuratively. That’s when I knew I was where I belonged!”
