Geocaching

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. There are 5 geocaches hidden on the USC Upstate campus, 314 within Spartanburg and over 2 million worldwide.

Learn How to Play

When searching for a geocache (or "cache") try to be inconspicuous. The location of each cache is a secret. If you take something from the cache, leave something of equal or greater value. Record your find in the cache's logbook. You will need to bring your own pen.

The coordinates (or icon on the map) will get you within 10-20 feet of the cache.

Each cache contains a logbook. ll you have to do is record your name and the date in the logbook and then place the geocache back exactly where you found it.

If at first you don't succeed, try again another day. Caches are often purposefully difficult to find. Easy caches are often mistaken for litter! f you believe a cache may be missing, email mfink@uscupstate.edu. Make certain to include the name of the cache in question.

Please do not move a cache from its original location. If you feel that the cache may not be located in the correct location, please email mfink@uscupstate.edu to notify the owner of your concern. Cache owners are responsible for maintaining their cache placements.

All on-campus caches must first be approved by USC Upstate. If you know of a great place to hide a cache, contact mfink@uscupstate.edu.

The caches on the USC Upstate campus are only the tip of the iceberg. If you are interested in searching for any of the caches located off-campus, visit www.geocaching.com. There is even an official app you can use to help you locate caches and track your findings.
