On August 26, 2005, the University of South Carolina Upstate began a new chapter in its remarkable history when it broke ground on a $24 million Health Education Complex. This is the first major academic building to be built in the northern segment of the campus. Situated on top of a hill, the Health Education Complex will have panoramic views of the beautiful Susan Jacobs Arboretum and of the main campus.

Included in the 150,000 square foot facility are the Mary Black School of Nursing, School of Education, Wellness/Fitness Center, Enrollment Services and Bookstore. The central location of these services will draw student activity toward the northern segment of campus where rows of Nuttall Oak trees are quickly defining a new Quad.

A Grand Opening event has been planned for January 7, 2009 with special events, tours, and other happenings for students, faculty, staff, and donors. More information will be posted here and on the USC Upstate home page as it becomes available.

October 2008 Construction Update

Education
There are nine total classrooms, including a lecture hall with tiered seating, a distance learning classroom, a computer lab for vision impaired instruction, and a prototypical lab with sinks for wet lab instruction. All classrooms have smart classroom technology and electronic Promethean marker boards, allowing notes that are written on the board to be emailed to students. These are the same type of boards that are used in many of the K-12 schools where our graduates will be teaching. There are also two seminar rooms for upper class students to use for detailed study in smaller groups, and a curriculum lab especially for students in the education field.

Nursing
There are nine total classrooms on the main floor, including a lecture hall with tiered seating and a distance learning classroom. All classrooms have smart classroom technology. There are also four seminar rooms for upper class students to use for detailed study in smaller groups. There is a Learning Resource Center on the lower floor, which includes several teaching spaces with a number of hospital beds and simulated head walls with air and suction, the same type which are used at Spartanburg Regional Hospital. The Learning Resource Center is comprised of large, medium, and small labs to simulate a variety of teaching environments found in local hospitals, and also includes a large simulation lab with student stations and video broadcast capability to enable instruction to remote sites off campus.

Both Education and Nursing teaching spaces utilize the same equipment used in K-12 schools and local hospitals to simulate actual environments where our graduates will work.

Wellness
Construction of the Wellness Center is scheduled to be complete in early 2009. In addition to supporting academic programs, the Wellness Center will provide exceptional recreational opportunities for students, such as a rock climbing wall, indoor track, competitive and lane swimming, and exercise equipment.
