Facilities Management Staff Assists Students in Efforts to Get Books to the Gulf
Over the Winter Break, students from the School of Education’s student organization, TEACh, collected over 5,000 books, including toddler, children, teen and parenting books, to donate to schools and daycares throughout the hurricane ravaged gulf coast. They gathered the books in the Media Building and spent days carefully sorting and packing the books into dozens of 40 pound boxes. See the December 19th Register for complete story.
The Facilities Management staff worked hard to transport the heavy boxes from the Media Building to the FMC, where they were stacked on pallets, shrink-wrapped, staged and coordinated for pickup by Overnite Trucking of Gaffney. The trucking company will carry the books free of charge to a distribution point in Tupelo, Miss. Facilities Management also provided the pallets, pallet lift and other equipment used in the movement and loading of the books.

"Fit into Life" with the Greater Spartanburg Shrinkdown Challenge 2006
As we all know, the most popular New Year’s resolutions are to get in shape, lose weight and improve our eating habits. USC Upstate has partnered with the YMCA of Greater Spartanburg, the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System and Mary Black Foundation to help you accomplish those three goals.
In the free eight-week Shrinkdown Program, participants will be challenged to begin healthy eating and safe exercise; they will be supported by fitness experts; and they will be provided with educational materials to help them reach their healthy living goals. The kick-off rally will be held Monday, January 9 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the University Readiness Center. Anyone may participate, and you may enter at any time during the eight weeks. No sign-up is necessary unless you assemble a group for the corporate challenge (by the December 22 deadline). For more information, contact Bridget Bayer or call ext. 5207. |

What you like most about USC Upstate?
USC Upstate offers a lot to a student like me. It has services such as OpNet to help freshman in their transition from high school. There are also organizations such as Collegiate 100, IMPACT, CAB, and MPC to help me express myself and my feelings. In all, Upstate has become a home away from home. |
| Little known fact: I'm obsessed with Pontiac Grand Am's. |
Organizations involved with and the reasons he joined them:
Campus Activities Board - I like the fact that I could help bring different talents to campus for our school.
MPC - I joined because I wanted to help bring about a cultural change on this campus.
IMPACT - I wanted to help my school and community better itself.
AAA - I wanted to be involved in an organization that was about empowering my culture.
Collegiate 100 - I wanted to be involved in an organization with men of color who wanted to do something with themselves.
|
Plans after graduation: I plan to relocate to Charlotte or Atlanta, in hopes of working for or heading the IT department in whatever discipline I choose. |
