Spotlight

Sarah Ruth Branch is a sophomore majoring in early childhood education from South Burlington, Vermont.

What do you like most about USC Upstate? I really enjoy the fact that I can be so at home here. I am 18 hours away from my parents, but I'm not uncomfortable with that at all, because this has become as much my home as Vermont. I think my favorite thing about USC Upstate is that I can walk into just about any of my professors' offices and talk to them about anything, yet not feel stupid or belittled because they know more than me. I feel like that is something unique to our campus.
Little known fact: I have a singing turkey that my friends and I enjoy doing the Chicken Dance to. Just don't expect to see me doing the Chicken Dance in public.

Organizations involved with: Campus Crusade for Christ, Student Government Association, and IMPACT

Why did you pick those student groups?I joined Campus Crusade because as a Christian student I needed to be a part of an organization that would help me grow spiritually. What I got when I started going to Campus Crusade was a family of sorts that really cares about me and loves me unconditionally. In the times where it is hard to be away from my family, they have become a major support and help. As for joining SGA, I did that on a whim. But, even though it was a spur of the moment, what the heck, sort of thinking, I have found that I truly enjoy SGA and that it enables me to be a part of helping better our school; I get to help other students. IMPACT is much the same way. Though I am not officially a member of IMPACT, I enjoy the opportunity to work with them on projects like Freshman Day of Service, and the Soup Kitchen. I love to help people, and whereas SGA allows me to help other students, IMPACT enables me to help the community. I like that.

Plans after graduation: I am going to teach! I am very excited to become a teacher; it is what I have always wanted to be. I want to teach kindergarten or first grade, but I also want to get my master’s in special education as soon as possible after graduating with my bachelor's degree. I am unsure of where I want to live and teach, though I do know that I do not wish to return to Vermont to live.
