Mock Trial Team Undefeated At Campbell University Tournament
The USC Upstate Mock Trial team is making quite a name for itself in the forensics community. On January 13 and 14, the team participated at the Campbell University tournament and earned both a 4-0 record and the second place team trophy. “This is amazing,” said Dr. Kevin Sargent, director of forensics and faculty member in the fine arts and communication studies department. “I’d have to call it a dream season so far.” USC Upstate was tied for first place with the State University of New York at Buffalo, who also compiled a 4-0 record, but had to settle for second after a tie-breaker formula was applied.

Heart disease is the number 1 killer of women.

Red Dress PinThis Friday, February 3 is National Wear Red Day, a day when Americans nationwide will wear red to show their support for women’s heart disease awareness. The Heart Truth – a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease – launched the Red Dress as the national symbol for women and heart disease. National Wear Red Day promotes the symbol and provides an opportunity for everyone to unite in this life-saving awareness movement by showing off a favorite red dress, shirt, tie, lipstick, handbag or red dress pin and donating $5 to the American Heart Association.

The subjects vary from beautiful magnolia blossoms to beach scenes and landscapes. Her formal art education includes studies at Moore Institute of Art in Pennsylvania and private instruction with Alma Barkshadt and Judy Sahms. Stack’s daughter, Carol Mitchell, is an associate professor of nursing in the Mary Black School of Nursing at USC Upstate and is credited with helping to arrange the wonderful exhibit.

TAPS Grants Funding Available (Note Corrected Deadline Dates!)
The Teaching Excellence Committee (TEC) is calling for applications for Teaching and Productive Scholarship faculty grants (TAPS) funding for spring 2006. We have some money left this spring that will be awarded to eligible applicants on a first come first serve basis. The guidelines for TAPS submissions are online. Please submit the original and 11 copies of your application to the TEC chair, Dr. Chioma Ugochukwu, Fine Arts and Communication Studies, HPAC 108. All applicants should please note that TEC’s new policy would require all recipients of TAPS grants to submit a final report to the chair and an electronic copy to Happy Montgomery within 30 days of the recipient’s return from a trip. The final report forms are available online.

The committee would also appreciate timely notification when the cancellation of a trip becomes necessary, so that funds could be made available to other applicants. Sprint Together with Nextel Spartan of the Week: Lele Miles - Women's Basketball
Women's basketball player Lele Miles has been named the Sprint Together with Nextel Spartan of the Week after leading USC Upstate to a pair of Peach Belt Conference victories and stretching the team's winning streak to four games.

Miles, from Naples, FL, averaged 14.0 points and 8.0 rebounds last week.  She shot 54.5% from the floor and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line in wins over Armstrong Atlantic State and Augusta State, both on the road.  She had 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists in the 60-56 at Armstrong Atlantic State Wednesday, then tallied a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds to go with three steals in the 10-point victory at Augusta State Saturday.

Miles has made a strong impact over the last month and has helped take some of the scoring and rebounding load off of Yakeeshia Ross.  She averages 9.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game for the year.

If you could meet one person in the world (past or present), who would it be and why? J. Edgar Hoover. He ran the FBI so well but was blind to the problems inside—people hiding things from him.

Plans after graduation: Law school and maybe the FBI.
