Shoestring Players Hold Auditions For “Before The Fire”
The Shoestring Players at USC Upstate will hold auditions for “Before the Fire” on Monday, February 27at 7:00 p.m. in the Studio Theatre in the Performing Arts Center. Parts are available for five women of various ages. Performance dates are April 13-15 at 8:15 p.m. and April 16 at 3:15 p.m. The play, written by Catherine Trieschmann, investigates the lives of five women from different social classes in London 1666. Trapped in a prison cell the day before the great fire of London, the women must overcome their differences in order to survive. Brian Haimbach, adjunct instructor of speech at USC Upstate, will direct "Before the Fire." He also directed the play's premiere at University of Georgia. USC Upstate Musical Extravaganza
You are cordially invited to attend the USC Upstate Musical Extravaganza on Tuesday, February 28 at 8:15 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Performers will include Dr. Gregg Akkerman, Brandi Icard, David Guthrie, Amanda von Williams, Jennifer Bell, Marty Fort, Clif Sutton, Therese Akkerman and Kristie Lee. Safe Spring Break Carnival
Alcohol & Drug Education Programs is sponsoring a Safe Spring Break Carnival on Thursday, March 2 on the Upper Quad from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Safe Spring Break Carnival is a new, fun, and informational event at USC Upstate that is open to students, faculty, staff, and anyone else who wants to have a great time and gain information about how to decrease our risk for problems, especially around Spring Break. It will feature an oxygen bar and massage tables as well as the Fatal Vision goggles experience, appearances by Sparty, and information tables regarding alcohol and drugs, nutrition and body image, rape and violence, sun safety, and more! Participants will be encouraged to sign a banner for the “Safe Spring Break Challenge.” Free “Spring Break Survival Kits” packed with t-shirts, sunscreen, koozies, Frisbees, information, and more will be given to the first 100 students. "Women in … Korea” Brown Bag Lunch
The USC Upstate Women’s Center is sponsoring a brown bag lunch series during the spring semester to draw attention to women’s roles around the world. The fourth lunch of the seven-part series will be held on Friday, March 3 at 11:00 a.m. in Hodge 155 and will focus on women in Korea. Regional Science Fair Judges Needed
Faculty interested in helping to judge the Region III Science Fair can now sign up online! This year’s fair will be on Tuesday, March 28 starting at 6:00 pm (refreshments will be available at 5:30). Richard Dawkins to Discuss Urban Gospel at USC Upstate
Richard Dawkins, owner and operator of Praize 103.3 FM, will visit USC Upstate on Friday, March 17 from 12:15 – 1:30 p.m. in Tukey Theatre. He will discuss the cultural significance of urban gospel in today’s society. A native of Taylors, S.C. Richard is currently the first Elder of the Antioch S.D.A. Church in Greenville. He is the recipient of the 1999, 2000, and 2001 Gospel Personality of the Year Award from the National Black Programmers Coalition and he received the 2005 Broadcasting Award from the Upstate Gospel Coalition. Dawkins hosted WJMZ-FM Morning Inspiration which aired each morning from 4:00 – 6:00 a.m. and Sunday Morning Gospel from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Before moving to WJMZ in 1997, Richard held a position as Regional Promotion Manager at Capitol Records in Los Angeles, Calif. and Program Director at WOKJ/WJMI-FM in Jackson, Miss. Richard is a founder of the Young Black Programmers Coalition.
