Extra! Extra!
While the students are enjoying a carefree Spring Break week, we can enjoy National Procrastination Week, March 6-12. While procrastinating is normally not considered a good thing at work, sometimes it makes sense. Instead of trying to multi-task and fire off e-mails every 60 seconds while scanning the Internet and leaving a voice mail message, just … stop. Maybe that e-mail doesn’t have to be sent right away. Stop rushing around and try to give yourself time to just think. In fact, use the time to think about what you won’t be doing on March 22, International Goof-Off Day.

What do you like most about USC Upstate?
The diversity. It gives you an opportunity to meet students from different nationalities, cultures, and ethnicities. It also gives you a more personal approach to and with professors. You’re not just a number.

Little known fact:
I met Sandra Bullock at Harris Teeter on East Bay Street in Charleston, S.C. We had coffee, and I got her autograph and her scene schedule notes from the filming of “The Notebook.”

Organizations involved with:
I am involved in community service with IMPACT. I chose to do so because I am very involved with my community, volunteering and mentoring youth.

If you could meet one person in the world, who would it be?
Monique Imes-Jackson (Nikki Parker) because she is a plus-sized woman like me and she’s very successful. I like her personal approach to plus-sized women of all races and ethnicities. It also doesn’t hurt that people say we look alike.

Plans after graduation:
I plan to pursue a career in radio and television as a talk show host. I am interning right now with 107.3 Jamz in Greenville, S.C. I hope they give me an opportunity to become an on-air talent.

Safe and Healthy Family Fair David Gergen visits USC Upstate Busy Time for USC Upstate Gospel Choir

On Saturday, February 25, Regenesis Community Health Center and Iglesia Bet-El Hispana sponsored a Safe and Healthy Family Fair. The free health fair was designed to raise health and community awareness for the entire family, focusing on mind, body, and soul.

There were many volunteers from USC Upstate who helped make the event a success. There was blood sugar testing and blood pressure checks performed by USC Upstate nursing students and Dr. Ricke-Kiely’s nonprofit administration class, including Erin Banner, Shannon McLamb, Melissa Mitchell, Stephanie Seeders and Kim Whitten, helped provide planning and public relations.

The staff of the Regenesis Community Health Center reinforces the need for all cultures to be embraced and teaches the importance of health education for all Spartanburg residents.

USC Upstate hosted David Gergen at an intimate luncheon for faculty and students on February 28. Gergen, a Washington insider, journalist, author and advisor to four United States presidents, was in town to deliver the keynote address at the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting. Gergen is currently a professor of public service at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government and director of its Center for Public Leadership. He is also editor-at-large for U.S. News & World Report.

The USC Upstate Gospel Choir had a busy February. The 150-voice student group, directed by Dr. Warren J. Carson, opened Black History Month with an anniversary concert at the Spartanburg Marriott with over 1,000 people in attendance. "It was an absolutely wonderful program--the choir was certainly at their best," says Carson. "The Marriott is a beautiful venue and quite well suited to our needs. What's more, the staff really went out of their way to accommodate us and the many guests in attendance."

The gospel choir also participated in "College Day" concerts in Greenville on February 10 and Camden, S.C. on February 18, as well as a concert at the Friends in Christ United Methodist Church in Chesnee on February 15 and a fellowship program hosted on campus by Generation Next on February 16. After Spring Break, the Gospel Choir has concerts scheduled in Anderson on March 26, Spartanburg on April 2, and Greer on April 9, as well as opening for the CD release by Faith Davis on March 31.

USC Upstate’s American Humanics partners with United Way and Mobile Meals to deliver “Bags of Love” to the elderly and homebound
Over 70 gift bags were donated to Spartanburg Mobile Meals last month to give a bit of cheer to the elderly clientele served by Mobile Meals. Upon request by the United Way, USC Upstate’s nonprofit student association, American Humanics, took the challenge. Each student was asked to bring one bag to the next meeting. “It was overwhelming,” said President Megan Murray. “We couldn’t believe how much the students wanted to give and help others in need. It is wonderful!”  Every week these committed students choose to help a community organization through volunteer work or donations. American Humanics is a student organization that assists participants in learning about nonprofit organizations in areas of volunteerism, fundraising, leadership, and public relations.
