Biology professor Gillian Newberry’s classroom lab is filled with lockers containing pressed and preserved samples of every type of plant growing in Upstate South Carolina. She’s now in her 30 th year of collecting flowers, weeds, vines, tree and bush leaves, and grass samples for the Herbarium. She and her classes are now in the process of making a plant inventory of what they find growing here at USC Upstate. She notes that a student recently discovered a Hexastylis naniflora, or dwarf flower heartleaf, an endangered plant, growing here on campus.

How many plant samples do you think she has collected in the Herbarium over the years? The first five people to e-mail Claire Sachse with the correct answer will win a Celebrate Community baseball cap, perfect for keeping the sun off while you’re out gardening in this nice spring weather.

In the Herbarium, there are:

a) 2,500 samples
b) 8,900 samples
c) 16,000 samples
d) 26,000 samples

Extra! Extra!

If you remembered to set your clock back yesterday, you’ll understand why today, Monday, April 3, is National Workplace Napping Day. Because of the loss of one hour's sleep the night before due to the return of daylight savings time, everyone in the country will be more sleep deprived than usual—and therefore more nap ready. National Napping Day is designed to make more people aware of the health and productivity benefits of napping. It is the perfect day for nappers to lie down and be counted.

Congrats to Capt. Geier!
The Spartanburg Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, led by USC Upstate’s Billy Geier (Information Technology), was chosen from among 22 units in the state for the Squadron of the Year Award. His squadron was recognized for its dynamic cadet program in which cadets are trained in leadership skills, aerospace and aviation knowledge, military customs, courtesies and drill and emergency services. The squadron also earned the award through an active adult program that is involved in emergency services both on the ground and in the air and an aviation flight program that provides cadets with orientation flights in airplanes and gliders.

The Spartanburg Composite Squadron also received the Squadron of Merit Award for its cadet program. This award is based on data provided by CAP National Headquarters regarding cadet retention, recruitment, promotions, cadet achievements and other criteria set forth by CAP National Headquarters.

The Admissions Office hosted Spring Open House on Saturday, May 25.  We had over 550 students and parents attend the program, which sets a new attendance record for open house.  The students participating were a mix of high school students and transfer students.  Most of the students were visiting to make a final decision about attending Upstate in the fall semester.

Family Fund Drive
The end of this year’s Family Fund Campaign is quickly approaching. The Family Fund at USC Upstate is the annual giving campaign that offers faculty, staff and retirees the opportunity to make personal gifts to the University. By making a gift to the Family Fund, members of the University community will have a direct impact on our campus, students, and the state. These gifts strengthen our future by funding scholarships, making capital improvements and supporting the mission of the University: teaching, research and service. For more information or to make a financial commitment, view the Web site, or contact either John Perry or Susan Holland. Pledges or gifts need to be made by April 24. Gifts can be designated and checks or pledges need to be made to the Carolina Piedmont Foundation. There will be a luncheon honoring the team with the most participation during the week of graduation.
