Marletha Booker, a political science major from Fountain Inn, S.C., was elected SGA Secretary for 2006-2007.

What was your platform during the election?
My platform is to keep students and faculty (especially students) more aware of changes before they happen.

What do you plan to do in office?
Our goal for next year's SGA is to keep students more aware of changes as they happen.  We want to keep the students as well as faculty better informed.

Do you have political aspirations for after you graduate?
After graduation I plan to attend grad school to get my masters or PH.D.

Have you ever served on a student government before?
No, I have never run for SGA before.

Why did you choose to run for SGA?
I ran for SGA at the last minute and I'm glad that I did because I have met so many wonderful people, and I have learned so many things that I would not have otherwise known.  There are a lot of issues that need to be addressed next school year.

Final grades for spring semester 2006 are due Friday, May 5 at 12:00 noon. Instructions were sent to your department. Please contact Katy Murphy at ext. 5641 if you have questions.

Faculty: please note new graduation processional time and process: Due to the large volume of students and the time it takes to process in, the student processional will begin promptly at 6:40 p.m. following the announcing of the Class of 2006. The faculty will then be announced at 6:50 p.m. for the faculty processional. Once the faculty are in place, the platform party will be announced at 6:55 p.m. with the ceremony beginning at 7:00 p.m. Please be dressed in full academic regalia, including hats, and gather in the lobby of the Media Building no later than 6:30 p.m. Purses and other valuables should not be brought to the ceremony as there is no place to lock them up. Traffic approaching campus will be very heavy during the hours prior to commencement, particularly due to the highway construction. Please arrive early to avoid any delays.

Construction begins on Health Education Complex
Major site work for the Health Education Complex began on Thursday, April 27. The work includes erosion control measures, tree preservation and relocation, topsoil preservation and stockpiling for future use, and major earthwork moving dirt from the site of the future parking lot on the west side of the site to the building site to use for the foundation of the new building.

Because of this work, pedestrians walking between the University Readiness Center and the Campus Life Center should use the walks along Hodge Drive. The sidewalk through the construction site is now closed for safety reasons, and will shortly be removed as the earthmoving begins.

Related to this work, a separate contract for the new parking lot on the east side of the building site was advertised today. Work on that lot should begin in about six weeks – the bidding and award period takes that long. The new lot should be open for use for the fall semester.  Please do not go into the construction areas for your safety.

Road Closure for Residential Move Out
University Police will close Hodge Drive on May 1, 2 and 3 to accommodate Palmetto House Residents who are moving out for summer break. Hodge Drive will be closed for most of each day. Hodge Drive will be open to one-way traffic going toward North Campus Blvd. only. The inside lane nearest the Palmetto House will be used for loading. University Police ask that students keep loading to 15-20 minutes. Please have all items staged for loading before pulling a car into the load area.

Graphic Design Students Return from Big Apple
The annual NYC Visual Arts trip shifted a bit from fall to February this academic year. With fundraising help from the Club Art & Design student organization and USC Upstate Student Life, nine graphic design students accompanied director and organizer, Professor Lisa Anderson. Four days in the Big Apple included a visit to Monica Stevenson’s photo studio, web design and developer the Chopping Block, and advertising agency Trollback and Company. Students viewed the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) National Competition Exhibition and attended the special Pixar exhibition at the newly remodeled Museum of Modern Art. Each provided valuable insight and inspiration to the participants. The students also enjoyed their stay at the infamous and eclectic Chelsea Hotel in the heart of the Chelsea district, Manhattan.

The 2006 NYC Visual Arts trip is slated for November 9-12, where similar visits are being planned to different agencies and exhibitions.
