Internet Browsers: Firefox has the features and security you need!
As a web developer, it is my utmost duty to talk to everybody about internet browsers. Currently, over 80% of all users viewing the university site still use Internet Explorer and I wonder why. I assume many people don’t know any better, but that’s why I’m here.

Mozilla Firefox has been my browser of choice for many years now and for good reason. It is more secure, has more features, and is more customizable than Internet Explorer. Features such as tabbed browsing allow you to have multiple pages open during one session and the integrated search box allows you to search sites such as Google, Wikipedia, and even Ebay without having to visit their site! So if you get a chance, head over to Mozilla.org to download Firefox, I promise you’ll like it or your money back! (its free)

USC Upstate Program Addresses Need for Certified Court Interpreters in Upstate’s Justice System
The committee leading the movement to raise awareness about the need for certified court interpreters are, from left to right, Desiree Allen, Manager of Court Services, S.C. Court Administration; Rosalyn Frierson, Esq., Director, S.C. Court Administration; Dr. Doris Paez, Director of the USC Upstate Metropolitan Studies Institute; Tammy Beshers, S.C. Appleseed Legal Justice Center; and Mary Schroeder, Esq., Deputy Director, S.C. Court Administration.

Hispanics, and other non-English speakers, will have increased access to justice in South Carolina through a pilot program initiated by USC Upstate which will train people to become South Carolina certified oral court interpreters.

This program was unveiled at a reception at USC Upstate on Friday at the Campus Life Center Ballroom. Over 100 court interpreters from across the state, as well as others with interest and a stake in the issue, including Senator Jim Ritchie, attended. The event was co-hosted by the South Carolina Court Administration.

“This meeting was the first of its kind in the state,” according to Dr. Doris Paez, director of USC Upstate’s Metropolitan Studies Institute and organizer of the event. “We are raising awareness about the need to recruit and train more certified court interpreters. People will learn where we stand and where we are heading with this important issue,” she added.

The 60-hour court interpreter training certificate program will be offered beginning this summer by USC Upstate at the University Center of Greenville for Spanish/English interpreters, with plans to include Russian, Vietnamese, Chinese and German at a later date. The practicum portion of the program will be hosted by the Greenville Family Court.

Important Blackboard Announcement
The Blackboard course management system administrators will begin removing courses for Fall 2003 and older this summer. Faculty will no longer see them when they login to Blackboard so if you have material in an old course that you would like to use in the future you should copy it into a newer course. You should also archive any complete courses you want to preserve. The old course that are removed by the system administrators will be archived in Columbia, but copying them to a new course or archiving them yourself will give you a backup. Students will no longer be able to access their courses that are older than Fall 2003. There is a new content system being implemented with Blackboard that will allow you store content on Blackboard without it being in a particular course. You will then just link to it from any course so when old courses are removed in the future, your content can still be maintained. Contact Tom Davis if you have questions or need assistance with this.

Summer Classes

Janice Janiec , associate professor of music, invites you to have a musical summer with her in the following classes. Call her at ext. 5253 or e-mail her with questions.

Selected Topics in Music: “Secrets of the Baroque”
Have you ever wondered what is “between the lines” in your music, art or history textbooks? Have you wondered what it would be like to be in a class where two professors, both passionate about their subjects, are willing to have a dialog with each other and with their students about what may have been hidden about art, music, the church, politics, and many other factors from the past that influence us today?

Janice Janiec, music and Aaron Cass, art, have planned a very exciting course for Summer I in which we “humanize” the artists and musicians from the Baroque era. We will use high tech presentations, a field trip to a real sculpture who works in the area, many videos and DVDs, and lots of conversation. Students will be free to express opinions, ask questions, and challenge us as “experts” in our fields. Earn three (3) hours credit in a 300 level course .The course is cross listed with Art on page 18 of the Summer 2006 Academic Catalog.

Intro to Music
It’s “Intro to Music” with a new twist! During Summer I, a ssociate p rofessor Janice Janiec will target the most famous and popular of the classic composers such as Mozart and Beethoven plus the most familiar and tuneful of the Romantic composers, Tchaikovsky, Schubert, and others. These men were the movie stars and rock artists of their day. T he course will be “hands-on” for students who need a course in music for general education requirements.

The personal approach in a high-tech classroom with capabilities for playing music, watching videos and having lively discussions is available for those who don’t have on-line capabilities, and who like the interaction between students and teacher. Help us maintain the traditional part of USC Upstate in the real, not “virtual , ” classroom with this course listed on page 21 of the Summer 2006 Academic Schedule. No Friday classes! Class is over in time to go to work!
