By now, I hope everybody has taken a second out of their day to download and listen to a podcast over at www.podcast.net. Today I’d like to talk about the power of podcasts. They offer everyday people the opportunity to reach a large audience at little cost. I created USC Upstate’s first podcast not even a month ago and it has already been played over 1,000 times. In the past, getting this kind of exposure would have required a lot more money or effort, but now we have the power to very easily create and publish content for nearly anyone to listen to. The University System has just recently embraced the idea of podcasts as a tool for faculty and staff. If you visit the University’s podcast directory here, you can see a listing of podcasts offered by the various faculty and staff members. Try out a couple of these to see how other employees are using podcasts, whether it be as a teaching aid for students, as a way to cover events around the school system, or as a way to share opinions with those who care to listen.
Next week, I’ll finish up my 3 part podcast lesson by telling everyone how they can subscribe to a podcast and how easy they are to create. |
| In the Spotlight |
Tiffany Olson recently completed a 135-hour intensive internship in arts management, arranged through the Center for Nonprofit Leadership, with Upstate Visual Arts this spring semester. Her duties included preparing weekly financial spreadsheets, updating the web site, arranging gallery showings, overseeing the “Member Benefits Program,” and selling advertising in the organization’s quarterly newsletter. As a result of her hard work and love of the arts, she was hired, starting this month, as the organization’s director of administration!
“One of my goals that I would like to see come to fruition at UVA,” Olson says, “is to have larger community involvement … as an arts nonprofit dedicated to elevating the stature of visual arts in the community, I will be working to meet with community leaders to enhance the public’s awareness of the organization.” |
