Happy 230th Birthday, America!

As you prepare to celebrate this nation’s birthday, keep in mind some safety tips if you’ll be staging your own fireworks show.

  • Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.
  • Read and follow all warnings and instructions.
  • Be sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks.
  • Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry leaves and flammable materials.
  • Never try to relight fireworks that have not fully functioned.
  • Keep a bucket of water handy in case of a malfunction or fire.

Coming Soon to USC Upstate: Monumental Sculpture Exhibit

Artist Adam Walls and USC Upstate art professor Jane Nodine are working on the installation of several of Walls’ playful sculptures on campus. Walls is a native of the Upstate region, having studied here in the early 1990’s before transferring to Limestone College for his BFA and to Winthrop College for his MFA in sculpture. Walls will exhibit several steel constructed, whimsical and thoughtful, sculptures on the central grounds of campus. Three are installed now and he hopes to have them all six installed by August in time for the start of the fall semester. Nodine says to look for forthcoming information about an opening reception which will be held late September or early October. Walls’ works will be on display through May 2007.

Bid/Quote Threshold Increase
On June 13 Governor Mark Sanford signed into law S.572, authorizing amendments to the consolidated Procurement Code. The Act became effective immediately. Although purchase procedures have been amended significantly, the ones that will most affect our everyday work are listed below:

  • Purchases =/< $2,500 (old code: =/<$1,500) - no competitive quotation required
  • Purchases >$2,500 - $10,000 (old code: >$1,500 - $5,000): 3 written quotes required
  • Purchases >$10,000 - $50,000 (old code: >$10,000 - $25,000): advertised in the SC Business Opportunities publication (SCBO) and written quotes.

Note: Due to the increase in the first threshold, the transaction limit for procurement cards also increased from $1,500 to $2,500. If you need clarification or have a question concerning other changes, please call the Director of Purchasing, Denis Ellinger at ext. 5771.
