Extra! Extra

In 1984, President Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month. He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by a full 90 percent of the nation's population. In the proclamation, President Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these events with "appropriate ceremonies and activities." The third Sunday of the month, July 16, was named National Ice Cream Day.

And this being South Carolina, it is only fitting that the peach have its own ice cream day, which happens to be today, July 17.

Peaches are one of the best flavors of the summer season. People wait for about 48 weeks for the peach harvest to ripen. And, when it does, for a few short weeks, it’s "peach everything!" In celebration of the harvest, the ice cream companies make peach ice cream. It’s hard to find other times of the year. Most major ice cream makers only produce it during the summer. Enjoy it on an ice cream cone, in an ice cream soda, in a sundae, or simply in a dish, today, July 17, Peach Ice Cream Day.

USC Upstate Adds Track and Cross Country
Stephens selected as head coach

With USC Upstate’s move to Division I in 2007-08, the University has added men’s and women’s track & field and cross country to bring the number of sports offered at USC Upstate to 15, surpassing the necessary 14 sports required to compete on the NCAA Division I level.  In addition, the University has selected Jimmy Stephens to head the cross country and track and field programs for the Spartans. The track and cross country teams will begin competition in 2007-08. “We are really excited about beginning the new programs and having Jimmy Stephens as the person to lead us in establishing what we believe will be strong programs,” said Athletic Director Mike Hall. For the full story…

Nick's Technology Nugget

A couple weeks ago I did a short series on podcasting and mentioned that we would soon be putting our television show, “Upstate”, in podcast format. Well, that day has come and I’d like to invite everyone to listen to the first two episodes here. You can listen to each episode by clicking on the image of Julie Phillips. I should have a couple more episodes up by the end of the week so check back, or if are familiar with RSS feeds, you can subscribe to the “Upstate” series to keep up with new episodes as they are released. Not familiar with RSS (really simple syndication)? Then check back next week as I talk about the usefulness of RSS feeds and what they can do for you.

Reminders

Vacation Reminder

With the summer months, many of us are taking vacations. This is a gentle reminder to update your phone’s voice mail message and e-mail out-of-office-auto-reply, so that fellow co-workers will know your whereabouts. Thanks.

Ask Me Buttons
In an effort to create a warm and friendly environment on campus for our new students, the Center for Student Success is providing green “ASK ME!” buttons to any faculty and staff who would like one.  We encourage faculty and staff to wear these buttons during the first week or two of school in August or any time you feel it is appropriate. Our new students will feel more inclined to ask for help knowing that person is definitely willing to be approached. The buttons have both a pin as well as a magnetic option for wearing. If you’d like one of these buttons, please request one. Please make sure to include your office mailing address. We appreciate your willingness to participate in this endeavor.

He was born June 13, 2005 in Guatemala and after a very long year waiting for all the red tape to be cut, the family has finally been united.

Employees of the University may install the new antivirus software on their personal machines immediately. Youth Leadership Summit
Last Friday, area youth were invited to participate in the free Youth Leadership Summit. The primary purpose of the summit, held at The Hangar of First Baptist Church, was to encourage youth, aged 11-17, to make wise choices and develop leadership skills. There were motivational speakers and interactive workshops, focusing on helping youth avoid risky behaviors, violence, drugs and alcohol. Other topics included job preparation, money management, education and leadership development. USC Upstate was one of over a dozen local sponsors of this event. Chancellor Stockwell and Dr. Bradshaw were on hand to talk with the group and Dr. Prioleau was on hand to judge the participants in the afternoon Sparkle City Idol competition.
