Reminders

Student Jobs
Cheryl Moore with the USC Upstate Career Center reminds everyone that any job opportunity on or off-campus should come through the Career Center office.

The reasons for this are:

  1. The Career Center can pre-screen opportunities to make sure that they are legitimate
  2. Students know to look on the Career Center job posting boards located in the Campus Life Center, Media and Smith Buildings
  3. The job opportunities can also be shared with students and alumni that are not on our campus

Please call our office (Ext. 5392) if you have any questions.

Have you traveled abroad this summer?
If so, please send Kathryn Mclaughlin your photos! Digital or print photos are acceptable (She has a scanner). As many of you know, the Chancellor’s Reception for international faculty, staff and students takes place each year at the end of September. In order to share your experiences with the entire international community at USC Upstate, she would like to display your photos during the reception. These photos are also used for other international events on campus during the academic year

Summer II Grades deadline
Lori Kopf, assistant registrar, reminds faculty that grades for Summer II are due at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, August 15. Faculty will receive a written memo as well.

Dr. Marsha Dowell, dean of the Mary Black School of Nursing at USC Upstate, recently co-led a special forum to develop a unified nursing workforce plan for the state of South Carolina. Retired Educators Find A Sustainable Lifestyle On The Farm

When Tom and Fran Davis retired a couple of years ago, he from USC Upstate and she from Spartanburg Day School, they decided to move from the city to the country to begin a sustainable lifestyle. Five acres of land situated on top of Windmill Hill between Inman and Gramling, the highest spot in Spartanburg County, is where they put down new stakes. Realizing that the existing farmhouse was in no condition to save without enormous expenditures, they began investigating how to build a small, energy efficient home that would be as environmentally friendly as possible. Soon they were intrigued by the idea of green or sustainable building methods which is the practice of creating healthier and more resource efficient models of construction, renovation, operation, maintenance, and demolition. The winner of  NBC’s reality television series Last Comic Standing, Josh Blue, will entertain USC Upstate students at the Stadium Party, an annual event held to welcome students back for the fall semester.

“We booked Josh Blue before he made it to the final four of Last Comic Standing,” said, Laura Puckett Boler, dean of students at USC Upstate. “Needless to say, demand and cost for his performance has skyrocketed. This will be a real treat for our students.”

Blue is a gifted stand-up comedian and talented U.S. Paralympic soccer player who refuses to bow to any of the challenges that come from living with cerebral palsy.  He has been making audiences laugh in top comedy clubs, theatres, college campuses and corporate events all over the country. "I realize that people are going to stare so I want to give them something to stare at," said Blue, who uses his self-deprecating sense of humor to defy stereotypes and encourage others to overcome their pre-conceived notions about disabled people.
