For this event, your challenge will be to solve a surprise problem based on the common freshman novel, “When the Emperor Was Divine.” A box of materials will be provided for you to use to create a piece of art based on the book. Panel Discussion on Influenza and You: The difference between avian and the typical influenza and the real risk in our community

The recent health events involving disease transmission between birds and humans in Asia are of growing concern to the public. As the media presents information about influenza outbreaks, questions arise for individuals and communities. A seminar will to be held this Friday, speakers will include Dr. Julie Helm who will discuss the Avian Flu, Christy Caruso who will discuss the Pandemic Flu, Kathy Bryant who will discuss infection control and community awareness, and Pat Elliott who will discuss personal preparedness. The speakers plan to answer such questions as: Do hospitals, schools, nonprofit and other organizations who serve people in congregate care settings have a need for real concern? What is the difference between avian and the typical influenza virus? How do I need to prepare for the influenza season? How should my organization prepare for a potential outbreak? The experts will explain the differences between in the types of influenzas and the real risks involved in our community. Propagandists love short-cuts – particularly those which short-circuit rational thought. By playing on emotions, exploiting insecurities, and bending the rules of logic, they can shape the way we think and act. As history shows, they can be quite successful. A “Preface Event:” Screening History: Documentary, News, Propaganda

Before television, the movie theater provided audiences not only with the feature, but with cartoons, newsreels and other short films as well. Many of these focused on the Japanese and German fronts during WWII, and we will watch an assortment of them: the U.S. government’s official documentary Why We Fight, directed by Frank Capra, who would later make It’s a Wonderful Life; a documentary of life for Japanese children in 1941; several defenses of Japanese internment; newsreel footage of the jungle war in Burma and the bombing of Japan; and more. Peter Caster and Rob McCormick will discuss how these short films “tell” history.
Southeast Meets Far East: An Artist Lecture and Reception with John and Margie Labadie

John and Margie Labadie, teachers at the University of North Carolina Pembroke who work in various forms of new media, will exhibit digital works they created in 2005-2006 during their Fulbright Fellowship to Taiwan from September 29 through October 27 at the University Gallery. Shoestring Players Present Amadeus

Amadeus tells Mozart's story from the point of view of the court composer Antonio Salieri who masquerades as Mozart's ally while at the same time doing his utmost to destroy the composer’s reputation and any success his compositions may have. Technology Training Workshops: Online Teaching Resources
Through our institutional membership in the Sloan-C Consortium for Online Education, paid for by a Faculty Technology Training Grant from the Carolina Piedmont Foundation, we are able to enroll up to 15 faculty members in some very good online professional development workshops. The following three online courses and one seminar are being offered this fall. Contact Dr. Tom Davis via email if you would like to participate in one or more of these.
Teaching Online – Course Development Basics: Based on research and the Sloan-C effective practices, this workshop provides the foundation for designing and delivering online courses. Faculty gain enhanced pedagogical knowledge and learn effective strategies for creative, online classroom facilitation. During the three-week workshop which begins Sept. 27th, facilitators will review the benefits and challenges of online curriculum development and teaching and address the qualities of effective online education. The workshop is designed as an 'active' learning experience, enabling faculty to explore actual online courses in several disciplines, as well as build a syllabus leading to a complete online course module for their course. Copyright Compliance for Online Educators: As an online educator, you face a new world of legal issues. In this workshop, Linda Enghagen, of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, will take you through the key copyright issues that you and your colleagues should be aware of when delivering your online courses. In response to this question, 24 practitioners at 16 colleges and organizations examine research, stakeholder perspectives and best practices in 13 chapters designed for multiple educational contexts such as: designing and delivering hybrid courses, student interaction and student satisfaction, strategies for training and preparing faculty and other related topics.
