The U.S. Department of Energy and the S.C. Energy Office are celebrating the 27 th annual “October Is Energy Awareness Month” campaign. The goal of this month is to promote a greater public understanding and awareness of energy sources, how they can be used wisely and effectively, and the importance of energy to the economic prosperity and future of the U.S. and S.C.

Faculty & Staff Briefs

Bea Smith (Alumni Affairs) has been hard at work on an educational display that the Office of Alumni Affairs will have in the House of Flowers at the Piedmont Interstate Fair beginning Monday, October 9. The display promotes the Susan Jacobs Arboretum. This is the third year of USC Upstate’s participation in the competition, and Smith hopes to bring back a prize this year! This year’s theme is “Give the Gift for Generations to Come” by giving a tree in honor or memory of someone special.

Carmen Harris (History) presented “‘Well I just generally bes the president of everything’: Rural Black Women’s Empowerment through South Carolina Home Demonstration Activities” at the Rural Women’s Studies Association’s triennial meeting in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on Oct. 7.

Athletics

Spartans Participate on Walk To School Day

John Caddell and Bret Hansen, from the Spartans Baseball Team, walk around the parking lot with students from Arcadia Elementary School.

Athletes from USC Upstate, Mike Colecchi, John Caddell, Scott Eckerd, Bret Hansen, Mandy Rupert, Kristen Kunz, Annie Holcombe, and Head Volleyball coach Jennifer Calloway participated in the Walk to School Day at Arcadia Elementary School the morning of October 4 with the whole student body. The promoter and organizer of the event was former USC Upstate baseball player, and now physical education teacher at the school, Jim Maciejewski. The whole purpose of the event was to let the students know that exercise, and eating healthy are an important part of life. Maciejewski wanted some athletes to come out and express to the young kids the importance of living a healthy life.

USC Upstate Facilitates Global Education Among High Schools on Different Continents
Students from Spartanburg High School and the Pretoria High School for Girls in South Africa participated in a global classroom experience thanks to the College of Arts and Sciences at USC Upstate. Last Friday at 8:30 a.m. (2:30 p.m. in Pretoria), the students engaged in a live interactive video conference that focused on the similarities and differences in American and South African culture. Part of this discussion examined whether globalization has impacted both cultures in the same way, or not. Read more…


Myers Publishes Book On Racial Integration At Fort Jackson
Dr. Andrew H. Myers, an associate professor of American studies and history at USC Upstate, has published a book entitled, Black, White & Olive Drab: Racial Integration at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and the Civil Rights Movement. Myers also holds a commission as an infantry officer with more than 20 years of combined active and reserve service in the U.S. Army. Read more …

 

 

 

Harry Simon to Sell Oil Painting to Benefit International Students at USC Upstate Growing up in Germany and now running a steel company based in Spartanburg, Harry Simon has a great appreciation of a strong work ethic, the value of higher education, and the opportunity to help someone less fortunate to make a better life for him or herself. Simon is president and CEO of All Metals Service & Warehousing Inc., a leader in providing precision metal processing, environmentally controlled storage services and professional transportation to integrated and mini mills, service centers, trading companies and original equipment manufacturers. Also an avid collector of 19 th Century oil paintings, Simon has a collection of more than 100 paintings, mostly of German impressionists. He has devised a very creative way to help promising international students at the University of South Carolina Upstate who may be facing financial difficulties. Simon plans to sell one of his paintings to help raise funds to benefit the University’s international students who have financial needs. USC Upstate Hosts Open House For Elementary And Early Childhood Educators To Learn About Graduate Programs

USC Upstate Seeks Math Whizzes for High School Math Contest
The Division of Math and Computer Science at USC Upstate invites all area high school math whizzes to the Second Annual High School Math Contest to be held on Saturday, November 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. High school students from Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, who live within 150 miles of Spartanburg, are invited to participate in the competition. Elementary Art Students Tour Campus
Cannon's Elementary Art Atlas students attended a field trip to USC Upstate Wednesday afternoon. Gallery assistant Jason Koontz gave a guided tour of the University Gallery, FOCUS Gallery, the outdoor monumental sculpture and the Visual Arts Center.

Students tour Performing Arts Center
The first COPC activity sponsored by FACS occurred Wednesday morning last week. Assistant professor Rich Robinson hosted students from Boiling Springs, Oakbrook and Spartanburg Christian Academy from 9:30-11:00 a.m. in the Performing Arts Center. After a brief introduction of the faculty, the students toured the building, including the theatre, black box and scene shop. Students also had an up close look at the set for Amadeus.

Diversity Week is October 9 – 13 here on the USC Upstate campus. A “Preface” Event: Tunnel of Oppression
Tuesday, October 10 … Campus Life Center Third Floor The Tunnel of Oppression presents the realities of oppression in an interactive, walk-through museum experience. Each room will present a multi-sensory view that will both educate and challenge us to think about our roles in various types of oppression. The experience attempts to break down a barrier that divides those who do not understand oppression and those who live it.

A “Preface” Event: Book Signing, Reception and Book Reading With Author Julie Otsuka

October 11 will be a busy day for author Julie Otsuka, as she meets students, faculty and staff in a day long series of events related to the Freshman “Preface” program and her novel When the Emperor Was Divine. Disability Services Brown Bag Lunch Series Continues with “Psychiatric Impairments on College Campuses”

The recent dramatic increase in students with psychiatric impairments attending post secondary institutions presents unique challenges and rewards for college campuses. A “Preface” Event : Trade Between the United States and Japan: An Elvis Impersonator in a Camry?

Dr. Parker, dean of the School of Business Administration, will discuss current issues in economic releations between Japan and the United States. Traditional goods and services are only part of the exchange between nations. After all, when the Prime Minister of Japan does and Elvis impersonation, it’s clear evidence the U.S. exports go beyond traditional manufacturing goods. And the popularity of anime in the U.S. indicates that Americans want more than cars and CD players from Japan. Dr. Parker provides an economic perspective for considering both the pressures and the benefits of trade between America and Japan today.
