Did You Know?

Did you know that November is the ideal time to plant spring flowering bulbs? Bruce Suddeth, director of landscaping, has some tips for how to properly plant bulbs for the best spring results. Planting depths, he says, are measured from the base of the bulb to the soil surface. For a crocus, this means two to three inches; for a grape hyacinth, three to four inches; a dutch iris should be five inches and tulips and daffodils set at eight inches (or five inches for smaller bulbs). The rule of thumb for planting bulbs is depth equals three times the height of the bulb. When planting, err on the side of planting too shallow. Many bulbs and corms have contractile roots. These roots serve to relocate the bulb or corm to its ideal depth. Hyacinths, daffodils, lilies, crocus, and gladiolus are just some that can relocate themselves. Happy bulb planting!
