Reminders

Is there less money or more in your paycheck?
If you made any benefits changes during the October 2006 annual enrollment, the net amount of your December 15 pay check will change.  This is due to benefits premiums being deducted one month in advance of the January 1, 2007 effective date.  Employees are urged to check their pay stub to make sure the applicable changes have been entered correctly.  If you think there is an error, please contact the human resources office.  Click here to see some examples of what could impact your pay check.

December Graduation Update to all faculty who will be participating in December Graduation Convocation on December 18
To celebrate the accomplishments of the December graduates and provide an opportunity for congratulatory conversations we will hold a reception immediately following the ceremony.  This will also alleviate the tremendous overcrowding in the auditorium lobby.  At the conclusion of the ceremony both the faculty and the graduates will recess back down to the arena for the reception. The reception food will be light refreshments like in May and will provide a larger venue for graduates and their family/friends to congregate.

Opportunity Greenville
In March 2005, USC Upstate partnered with the Greenville Chamber’s Leadership Development Division to sponsor scholarships for selected participants to attend the Leadership Greenville and Opportunity Greenville programs. The latest recipient of the scholarship for the fall session of Opportunity Greenville was Allyson Tesh, Heroes Campaign Manager for the Upstate chapter of the American Red Cross.

Opportunity Greenville is a program packed with information and activities to help participants understand the inner-workings of the Greater Greenville area. Participants learn about the economy, government, culture and history from an insider’s perspective. Students meet leaders and decision-makers and learn ways to become more involved in the community.

Update on the Health Education Complex
At long last, the Notice to Proceed on the Health Education Complex was issued to Oscar J. Boldt Construction Company of Augusta, Ga. on December 12.

It has taken a long time to actually award the contract for several varying reasons, according to Rick Puncke, director of Facilities Management. Bids for the project were opened on August 3, 2006.There were three bidders, and the low bid was higher than the funds available for the project at that time. The University quickly identified funds to add to the project, and began the process to increase the project funding authorization. This process took until close to the end of September.

The Notice of Intent to Award was then issued, and a sixteen day time period followed during which protests against the award could be filed. The day before award would have been made, the second low bidder filed a protest, triggering a long legal process that resulted in the State’s Chief Procurement Officer for Construction ruling that the award should be made to Boldt. Once again, a time frame began during which that ruling could be appealed but this time there was no appeal, and the award was allowed to proceed.

The Health Education Complex will be built on the north side of the campus, adjacent to North Campus Boulevard where the earthwork for the project was completed last summer. The facility will house the School of Education, the School of Nursing, all Enrollment Management functions, the Campus Bookstore, and the new Wellness Center. It is close to 145,000 square feet in size. The building will feature many state of the art features that will provide improved academic, service, and recreation capabilities. It also is designed to meet LEED standards and thus will be our first “green” building.

Construction will be complete in the late spring of 2008, and building acceptance, testing of systems, move-in of furnishings, and relocation of all of the occupants will be completed in time for classes to be held in fall of 2008.

There also a webcam that will chronicle the construction process. You can view the second-by second camera here.
