Coming Up …

Shoestring Players to Present: Nunsense
April 19-22 … Humanities and Performing Arts Center
The entire cast of Nunsense is comprised of USC Upstate students. Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth grade production of “Grease.” Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head.

The Power of Recycling
At USC Upstate, when you throw away paper in appropriate recycling bins, the Facilities Management staff takes the paper to the large mixed paper bin at the Facilities Management Center. From there it is picked up by Spartanburg EVS and becomes part of the tonnage that the city recycles. Here is a report that tracks the University’s efforts to recycle mixed paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, waste oil, florescent bulbs, batteries and trees/compost, over the past decade.

The city of Spartanburg takes our paper to Southern Paper Stock or it is hauled to Pratt Industries. According to Mary Lynn Eddie, Spartanburg County’s Recycling Coordinator, in February, mixed paper was up to $61/ton and cardboard $86. “That's a long way from when we used to have to pay to get rid of it!,” she says.

Eddie also adds that Spartanburg County has not only met, but has surpassed the state's recycling goal of 35 percent. Last fiscal year, according to South Carolina Solid Waste Management's Annual Report, the county’s rate was 43.6 percent. Waste prevention and recycling can result in significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. The county recycled 176,831 tons of MSW resulting in an environmental impact equivalent to:

  • eliminating electricity usage by 83,232 households for one year;
  • growing 16,625,137 tree seedlings for 10 years;
  • or conserving 73,847,418 gallons of gasoline.

Although we recycled 3.6 pounds/person/day; the county still disposed of 4.7 p/p/d. Eddie adds, “There will always be more work to do.”

Faculty & Staff Briefs

Ray Merlock , Director of Interdisciplinary Studies, chaired a panel “The Western as Entertainment: Meddlin’ with the Medium” and delivered a paper “Through the Western Darkly:  Jonah Hex and Loveless and the History of Western Comic Books” at the 2007 Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association Conference in Boston, April 4-7.  Merlock also served as recorder for a Journal of American Culture Advisory Board meeting.

 William Koehler , instructor at the Mary Black School of Nursing has been invited to contribute as a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association Restraint and Seclusion Task Force. A 23-member steering committee will synthesize input from the larger consultant group to determine what is needed to update the APNA publication, Seclusion and Restraint: Position Statement and Standards of Practice.  Members of this Committee will research literature, write additions, may provide leadership to smaller workgroups that address setting or population specific issues, and will prepare final recommendations for consideration by the APNA Board of Directors. The widespread interest in this project is evidence of its critical importance to psychiatric mental health care. To fulfill the Task Force responsibility and charge, specific areas of concentration will be:

  • Consider changes to align with current Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and Joint Commission standards
  • Consider changes that would address special populations and/or settings such as children and adolescents, older adults, people on forensic status, people receiving services in settings such as schools, emergency rooms, and residential settings.
  • Consider describing best practices in more specific detail
  • Integrate literature associated with the concepts of Recovery and Trauma

Koehler currently teaches psychiatric and mental health nursing on the Greenville campus, facilitates in-patient and out-patient clinical experiences for nursing students in the area of mental health nursing, and teaches Introduction to Professional Nursing at the Spartanburg campus.

Denise Levereaux
and Nick Catto (Communications) attended a conference on accessibility on the USC campus in Columbia in March. The conference was about building websites that were accessible to people with different disabilities.
