Staff Spotlight
Ryan Boggs
Administrative Assistant, Advancement Ext. 5218
Ryan works on the third floor of the Administration Building in the Advancement office, helping to coordinate the events and programs that create and solidify the University’s partnerships that help advance the University’s mission with individuals, alumni, corporate leaders, foundations, governmental agendas and corporate entities. This Spartanburg native has worked at USC Upstate for a year and four months and he enjoys it because “there is always something in progress – so much newness with buildings being built, expansion – and it’s exciting to be a part of that growth.”
Ryan is a classically trained pianist, playing since the third grade. He also likes to knit sweaters, clothing and scarves. And he has to be careful in cold weather because he has an artificial elbow (the result of a biking accident) which freezes up!
Alumni Spotlight
Les Davis ('06 - Speech/African American Studies) presented a paper at a national conference on Saturday, April 21. He was one of six undergraduates (three in English and three in foreign languages) selected to read papers at the 67th Annual Convention of the College Language Association (CLA) held in Miami, Fla.
The title of his paper was "Spiritual Groundings: Black Men in the Face of White Power" and dealt with the depiction of black men in the armed services who confronted various prejudices as portrayed by African American writers during the first half of the 20th century. Davis was on a panel with a student from Clayton State University in Morrow, Ga. and one from Southern University in Baton Rouge, La.
Davis originally wrote the paper for Dr. Carson’s African American Literature class. Dr. Carson submitted the paper along with a recommendation to the Program Committee. The panel was quite well received and Davis’ paper drew particular praise from the audience.
Davis currently works part-time on campus (Monday through Thursday) in the Office of Academic Advising (ext. 5598).
