Academic Reminders
Notice for Education Majors Teaching in Spring 2008
If you plan to student teach in spring 2008 remember to get application materials in Media 118. This includes a USC Upstate application to student teach, a teacher application for SDE, and a fingerprint card. Read ALL directions carefully! Then, return all materials together (your responsibility, not your advisor’s) to Dr. Carol Gardner by March 31, 2007. Include a money order for $75 made out to SC State Department of Education (be sure to keep your receipt for this). If you have any questions, contact Becky Taylor or Carol Gardner.
Have a student who has excessive absences?
The Extended/Excessive Absence Report is now active and available on the Center for Student Success web site. Remember to use your normal campus username and password to get past the security wall. Then you’ll be prompted for your SSN to show your current courses. The system is designed to alert students who have 1) never attended class but are listed on your roll, 2) have attended before but have been absent for an extended period of time or 3) have sporadic but excessive absences. Each Friday, the student and course information is pulled and letters reminding the students of their status are sent home. Please continue to report as frequent contact might encourage them to follow-up sooner. Thank you for your participation as we work to “intervene early” with students who may be in jeopardy. (Please note: The Unsatisfactory Progress Report portion of the Early Intervention Program will not be available until mid-semester.) If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact Lori Holtmann, Coordinator of Student Success Initiatives at ext. 5049.

Staff Spotlight
This spotlight is really Part II of Janice Dellinger’s profile. She created a buzz with her admission in the Register two weeks ago that she has never had any speeding or parking citations in 44 years.
Did she knock on wood when she said that? Evidently not. Janice writes … “I knew that was a mistake, as soon as I said it….Today on my way to work, I was less than one mile from home on Anderson Mill Rd., and there, sitting in the parking lot of the Westview Fire Department, was a Spartanburg County policeman….As soon as I passed, he pulled out and flipped on his siren. I stopped, and of course he said I was speeding….I politely gave him my license, etc. and to make conversation, mentioned the recent [ Register] article, and how I knew afterward, I shouldn’t have bragged…. He chuckled and went to his car to validate my records and write the ticket. He returned and said, “Ma’am, I’m not going to ruin your perfect record, but you do need to slow down and pay attention to the speed limit.” I kindly thanked him and went on my way.
Moral of the story…it just doesn’t pay to brag, it can turn-around in a day!
Student Profile

Leslie Brown was profiled last week by the Herald-Journal. She is a visually-impaired USC Upstate student who depends on text-to-speech technology for her course work. The article addresses the technological hurdles the blind must confront in furthering their academic careers.
