Chief of Police Search – Interview with Mr. Scott Beckner

Our first candidate for the chief of police position is Scott Beckner who will be conducting a presentation to the entire campus community in the CLC ballroom this afternoon, as part of his two-day visit to the USC Upstate campus. We extend an invitation to you to attend his presentation and share your thoughts with us. Beckner has 19 years of law enforcement experience and is currently an administrative lieutenant with Michigan State University. He has a Juris Doctorate, Masters of Science, and a BA in Criminal Justice. He is a former police officer with the City of East Lansing, Mich. MLK Commemorative Walk

Grammy Award Winner Jazz Pianist/ Vocalist Diane Schuur

If you missed her last time around, not to worry, she is back! Grammy award winner and acclaimed jazz pianist/vocalist Diane Schuur will be returning to USC Upstate this upcoming Friday. She will conduct a one hour lecture/demonstration in the Humanities and Performing Arts Theatre at no cost for your enjoyment. Spend an enchanting lunch hour as Ms. Schuur entertains you by sharing her life within the music industry and sings a few of her fabulous tunes for you.....She is dazzling, thoroughly entertaining and most delightful. “Beginning to Save” Seminar

USC Upstate Presents Guitar Concert

Marty Fort, guitar instructor at USC Upstate, will present a concert dedicated to celebrating the eclectic music of the modern guitar on Tuesday, February 6 at 8:00 p.m. in the Humanities and Performing Arts Center. The concert will feature performances by USC Upstate faculty and students and the Columbia guitar orchestra will perform classical, jazz and popular music. Graduate School Test Prep Workshop for Spring 2007

Are you thinking about graduate school but worried about the entrance exam? If so, the Division of Student and Diversity Affairs and Opportunity Network are pleased to announce an opportunity for students, alumni and staff to participate in the GRE and GMAT test prep workshops. Workshops will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m., starting February 5, and includes 18 hours of instruction (nine hours of English and nine hours of math) in 14 sessions over a seven week period. Webinar: The Latest on the Sexual Harassment Front

Explore the latest developments in sexual harassment law. Learn how recent court cases should inform your decision-making and what those cases mean in the context of higher education. This Webinar will examine the current legal climate on such sexual harassment issues as what does and does not constitute a hostile environment, why recipient subjectivity matters even more than you may have thought, what actually constitutes an adverse action and other timely topics. The session also includes a focus on that often elusive practical guidance to be gleaned from the latest case law. The presenter will be Laura Todd Johnson, attorney, University of Arizona; member of the board of directors for the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault; commissioner on the University of Arizona Commission on the Status of Women. Black History Month Events Include Visit by Dr. Essie Mae Washington-Williams

Dr. Essie Mae Washington-Williams , a retired teacher and the daughter of the late U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond, will give a presentation on Tuesday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. in the Campus Life Center Ballroom. Thurmond, once this country's leading voice for racial segregation, refused to acknowledge Washington-Williams publicly but had a strong ongoing private relationship with her. Mrs. Washington-Williams discusses this relationship and the contradiction between the father she knew and his public image. In her book, Dear Senator, Washington-Williams shares her life story – one that has enriched the lives of many and has helped to change the fabric of American history.
