New This Week
USC Upstate Welcomes Major League Baseball Umpire to Sports Officiating Class Professional baseball players who have made it to the major league have beaten the odds. The same can also be said of the umpires who officiate those same major league games. Few people realize that the selection process for major league umpires is as competitive and tough as it is, according to Fieldin Culbreth, one of only 68 major league umpires nationwide, who was a guest speaker at the University of South Carolina Upstate’s “Officiating of Sports” class on February 22. Culbreth is a graduate of Chapman High School in Inman. Culbreth was invited to speak to the class and share his experiences and anecdotes of umpiring major league games for 11 years, to highlight little known career opportunities available in the field, and to discuss the pros and cons of life as an umpire. Pat, Frances, and Trevor believe that giving to USC Upstate is a wise investment. They weren’t looking for prizes, but win they did!
And they helped their Family Fund teams get closer to a free celebration lunch, hosted by the Carolina Piedmont Foundation in May. One winning team will be honored for their commitment to our school.
You can help USC Upstate, help yourself, and help your team, too. Send your pledge or check to the Carolina Piedmont Foundation for the benefit of your favorite campus project, department, or scholarship. Your name will be entered in our FINAL gas card drawing March 15.
Gas prices are up, but a $50 gas card can take you a loooong way. Call 503-5209 or email sholland@uscupstate.edu for more information on how to give.
