New Feature In the Register
After viewing your comments in our recent Register survey, we’ve decided to add more technical functionality on a step-by-step basis. Today, you’ll notice that next to some of our events there is a link with a calendar icon that will allow you to add events directly to your Outlook calendar. By clicking on this link you’ll be asked whether or not you want to save the event in your Outlook calendar.

Depending on what browser you use, the link may automatically open in your Outlook calendar, or you may have to first save the calendar file to your desktop, then click on it for it to open.

We hope that this will make it one step easier for you to remember the events seen in the register. If you have any questions on making this feature work, feel free to contact Nick Catto at ncatto@uscupstate.edu.

Look out for more improvements to come!

Update from IT on Web CT
After discussions with the IT Advisory Roundtable and Faculty Welfare Committee, Information Technology & Services will not be renewing the USC Upstate campus Web CT course management system license effective July 14. We will continue to support courses on Web CT until that date. The math student placement test is being transferred over to the Blackboard CMS and Tom Davis will assist anyone wishing to move their Web CT course over to Blackboard. The decision to eliminate Web CT was based on a number of factors which include:

  • Standardization on one CMS so
    • the students only have one system to learn
    • Instructional Technology only has one system to train on
    • ITS only has one system to support
    • the university only pays for one system (making more funds available for classroom technology)
  • The majority of courses were already on Blackboard ( Web CT only had 6 – 7 users)
  • Blackboard purchased Web CT a few years ago and are working toward one platform themselves

ITS regrets any inconvenience this change causes and will assist with the conversion in any way possible.

New Policy
The University’s “World Wide Web Policy and Procedures Guidelines” are now posted online for your review. The purpose of the university web policy is to ensure accuracy, consistency, integrity, and protection of the identity and image of the University by providing a set of minimum standards and guidelines for web sites of USC Upstate’s departments, schools, facilities, organizations, and affiliates. The policy addresses personal web pages, student organization web pages, ADA accessibility, advertising, fundraising, copyright, web server registration and the content management system.

On Upstate TV

Dr. Darrell Parker , dean of the School of Business, and USC Upstate alum, Chris Fowler, VP at Wachovia, are the guests on the next episode of Upstate TV. Their interview focused on the importance of finishing a four year degree – particularly in business in getting a job in today’s economy. Dr. Parker emphasized USC Upstate’s general business program, which, by design represents different functional areas of business such as accounting, finance, management and marketing. The combination of these skills is more important for the small businesses in our region than a pure specialization in one area. Also discussed on the show are the opportunities for adults with some college to come back to school and finish their degree either directly through Upstate or in combination with Greenville Tech and Spartanburg Community College.

Showtimes are:

American Humanics
American Humanics was just awarded $5 million from the Kellogg Foundation for the Next Generation of Nonprofit Leaders program. The purpose of the grant is to enhance the student internship experience so they do not necessary have to work in addition to the internship. We hope that this will allow students to fully concentrate on their internship duties. This is yet another benefit for nonprofit major and minor students who join the American Humanics Student Association (AHSA).This grant is for students who have the nonprofit coursework (major or minor), are active members of AHSA, and who intend to get certified in American Humanics.  Students can apply funding in the spring, summer or fall semesters and can apply for multiple semesters. The stipend is for $4500 for 300 hours. This is $15.00 per hour!  This is only open to the 70 colleges and universities that are involved in American Humanics. Additionally, they can do this in conjunction with an internship which is already paid (USC Upstate has some) and with Americorp. This opportunity is open for the next five years. This will allow students to prepare for this opportunity even if they are freshman. For more information call 503-5754.

Glue, an opera, has a fairy tale theme in which a wizard intervenes when two young girls always find themselves at odds with each other. One girl wants to use a plot of land to plant a garden and the other one wants to use it to practice her dance routine. Constantly arguing with each other, the wizard puts the girls in a sticky situation that forces them to learn to work together. Glue was composed by Carrie Leigh Page, a 2002 graduate of Converse College who is the current Composer-in-Residence at St. Martin of Tours in Louisville, Ky. Page received her master’s of music degree in music composition from the University of Louisville in May 2005, where she studied as a Bomhard Fellow in Music composition. The Pi-rize goes to …
Last Wednesday, Pi-Day, passed quietly on the USC Upstate campus. The Register Reporter offered a pi-rize to anyone who was planning to celebrate the day, and only one person stepped forward: Susan Hodge from University Advancement. Her plans for Pi-Day included playing the pi-ano and re-reading her copy of The Life of Pi. Pi is a little boy stuck on a boat with a boa constrictor and a man-eating tiger. Says Susan, “It has a lot of ‘life's lessons’ in it – how to grab the tiger by the tail, and such… I couldn't put this book down once I started it and I recommend it to all.” For more information on Pi-Day, visit the web site.

University Communications encourages the use of the online directory primarily to conserve paper and printing costs, but also to reduce the number of internal calls to the switchboard operator.

Download the directory here. This is a large file and will take several seconds to download. Please note that as updates are made online, the directory you download will reflect the changes.
