Peach Belt Releases Tournament Bracket

May 7, 2007
Augusta, Ga.
- The Peach Belt Conference released the 2007 Baseball Tournament bracket on Monday following the conclusion of the regular season over the weekend. Georgia College & State University, the 2007 PBC regular-season champions, take the top seed for the tournament while Columbus State will be the second seed and Francis Marion the #3 seed. The tournament will begin this Thursday, May 10, with GCSU taking on #6 seed USC Aiken. The tournament brings the top six teams in the PBC together for a double-elimination event with the winner getting an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

GCSU and USCA will meet at 11 am at the Cleveland S. Harley baseball park on the campus of USC Upstate. Columbus State will take on fifth-seeded Armstrong Atlantic State at 3:00 and Francis Marion will meet #4 USC Upstate at 7 p.m.

The top six teams have known they will make the tournament field for more than a week, but not which seed they would hold. It was only after the final weekend of conference play as AASU dropped two of three to North Georgia that created some tension as AASU, USCA and Upstate all finished with 15-15 conference records. USC Upstate earned the tiebreaker thanks to their 5-1 combined record against USCA and AASU. AASU then took the next spot after beating USC Aiken in two of three games during the year.

GCSU is the top seed for the second year in a row after winning the regular-season championship with a 23-7 conference record. The Bobcats, ranked #6 in the nation, reached the final day of the 2006 tournament but fell to Columbus State in the championship game. GCSU has reached the championship game four times, but has yet to capture a title.

The 2007 PBC Tournament is the second since the event was reborn after a seven-year hiatus. The Peach Belt held tournaments from 1992-98 but then stopped with concerns over its overlap with final exams. In 2006, the NCAA began awarding automatic bids for the first time and a new PBC tournament format was devised that would not interfere with finals. The reborn tournament was held in Aiken, S.C.

All 2007 PBC tournament games will be broadcast with live audio on the internet and also have live statistics.
