The George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics at the University of South Carolina Upstate is hosting a stop of the “Tour de Bulb” on Monday, November 17 at 10:00 a.m. at the Chapman Cultural Center. Mayor Bill Barnet will speak and will be joined by local business leaders carrying the contest’s light bulb torch.
Area business leaders will speak to encourage residents to submit their ideas include John Warner, CEO of Jute Networks LLC and manager of the Swamp Fox Community; Dr. Ron Fulbright, former New Ideas Winner and chair of the department of informatics at USC Upstate; Dr. Darrell Parker, dean of the Johnson College of Business and Economics at USC Upstate; and James Poch, winner of the 2007 Tour de Bulb who will demonstrate his plug-in hybrid vehicle.
“Tour de Bulb” is a multicity tour to promote the fourth annual New Ideas for a New Carolina business idea competition. The contest awards ideas that could create new jobs, new energy, new talent and new wealth for South Carolina. The tour features winners of last year's contest who will pass the torch of creativity and business innovation to other South Carolina citizens.
New Ideas for a New Carolina business idea contest is sponsored by SC Launch, New Carolina: South Carolina’s Council on Competitiveness, FastTracSC, ThinkTEC and other organizations around the state.
The winners will be announced at the ThinkTEC Innovation Summit in Charleston on February 11, 2009. This year’s contest will award the grand prize winner $5,000 of seed money for their business idea, a scholarship to FastTrac® entrepreneurial training program, tickets to the ThinkTEC Innovation Summit and a Dream Team of Mentors to help the winner cultivate their idea. Four first place prizes of $2,500, a scholarship to FastTrac® and tickets to the ThinkTEC Innovation Summit will be distributed as well as five $1,000 honorable mention prizes. Once again the contest will feature the People’s Choice category where the residents of South Carolina will be able to vote for their favorite idea. Entries may be submitted through December 2 by
