Adams Named USC Upstate Distinguished Alumnus of the Year

Spartanburg, S.C. - The University of South Carolina Upstate Alumni Association named C. Dan Adams as the 2008 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. Adams, who earned a bachelor’s degree in business from the University in 1983, is the president and CEO of The Capital Corporation. He will be presented with the award at the Convocation Honoring December Graduates on Tuesday, December 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium.

Dan AdamsAfter graduating from USC Upstate and University of South Carolina in Columbia, Adams began a long, successful career in the banking industry. He worked for C&S National Bank for 12 years before striking out on his own. He founded The Capital Corporation in 1991 as an investment banking firm focusing on mergers and acquisitions to the middle market. Since the firm's founding, Adams has led The Capital Corporation to become one of the largest and most influential mergers and acquisitions boutiques in the Southeast. Adams has advised companies in various sectors including, health care, manufacturing, service, restaurant, transportation, and waste industries. 

Adams serves as chairman of the board of First National Bank of the South and is a board member of several privately held companies in the Southeast.  Adams lives in Greenville and is the father of two daughters, Carey, 18, and Abby, 14.

“We are pleased to honor Dan Adams with the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award,” said Bea Walters Smith, director of alumni relations, scholarships and annual giving at USC Upstate. “He is well deserving of this honor both for being an accomplished alumnus and loyal to his alma mater in terms of support and giving. For nearly three decades, Dan has put his experience in finance and business to use in directing more than 200 merger and acquisition transactions. He is a role model for our students and a shining example to our alumni and donors.”

Adams encourages other alumni to remain loyal to USC Upstate. “I’ve been fortunate to have achieved a level of success in my life,” said Adams, who also received the USC Upstate Athletics Department's Distinguished Service Award earlier this year. “Giving is important and I challenge other graduates to remember the time spent at USC Upstate and when they achieve success, remember to give back.”
