“The completion of the Health Education Complex is a cause for great celebration,” said Dr. John C. Stockwell, Chancellor of USC Upstate. “Increased classroom space and enhanced technology will benefit USC Upstate and the Upstate in far-reaching ways, and the Wellness Center will provide first-rate recreation, exercise, and instructional opportunities for the campus community.”

Facility tours of the Wellness Center will begin at 1:00 p.m., following grand opening festivities. A variety of wellness activities have been planned for the week of February 23-27, including weight room orientation, spinning class, cardio kickboxing, intramural basketball, salsa dancing, and a table tennis mini-tournament. A full schedule of activities is available online.

“The Wellness Center will offer much more than just physical wellness programs,” said Laura Puckett-Boler, interim vice chancellor of student affairs and dean of students. “Physical education classes will be taught in the facility, to encourage the improvement of students’ academic wellness as well.”

The Wellness Center is the home of Campus Recreation, which offers activities such as intramural sports, group fitness, aquatics, outdoor recreation, and sport clubs. This 60,000 square foot facility within the Health Education Complex features two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, two badminton courts, two racquetball/handball courts, a 1,900 square foot group fitness studio, a 1,250 square foot weight room, three-lane running track, spa, and an eight-lane recreational swimming pool.

The three-story Health Education Complex houses the Mary Black School of Nursing, School of Education, Wellness Center, Enrollment Services and Bookstore. The centralized location of these services has drawn student activity toward the northern segment of campus, while also providing necessary classroom space and innovative learning opportunities for students. Technological advancements in the 150,000 square foot Health Education Complex allow nursing and education students to receive hands-on instruction by using the same tools currently utilized in schools and hospitals.

“The Health Education Complex will provide excellent educational and recreational opportunities for current students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the University,” Chancellor Stockwell said. “In addition, this facility will be integral to the recruitment of prospective students from this point forward.”
