08- 14- 2009

Spartanburg, S.C. - University of South Carolina Upstate graduate, Christina Landrum, 22, has been studying at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York City since the end of May.

Stella Adler Studio of Acting was established in 1949 and is based in the Adler technique and incorporates the techniques of Konstantin Stanislavski, Harold Clurman, and the Group Theatre. The studio believes that growth as an actor and as a human being are synonymous. The courses are designed to create independent actors, ignite the power of imagination, instill the importance of action, hone informed script interpretation, and cultivate rich humanity in their actors.

Landrum and ParrishLandrum, shown at left with Stella Adler instructor Betsy Parrish, graduated from USC Upstate in May 2009 with a degree in communications with emphases in journalism and theatre. She received an invitation to attend the Stella Adler Studio of Acting to attend the Summer Conservatory after her auditions at the South Eastern Theatre Convention.

When asked what she has learned while attending Stella Adler Studio of Acting, Landrum said, “My courses include scene study, Shakespeare, improv, movement, composition, Adler technique, voice and speech, As students, we are constantly encouraged to be truthful in our acting. An actor can never lie on stage or screen. Over all I’ve learned a sense of empowerment in my craft. The technique gives a confidence to tackle any role. The work is also freeing as a person because we are constantly encouraged to go with impulses and not apologize for who we are as people.”

Some famous names who studied at Stella Adler include: Marlon Brando, Warren Beatty, Kevin Costner, Robert De Niro, Benicio Del Toro, Teri Garr, Melanie Griffith, Salma, Hayek, Cloris Leachman, Sidney Pollock, John Ritter, Diana Ross, Mark Ruffalo, Martin Sheen, and Cybill Shepard.

Landrum’s future plans are to come home and try to find a job. “I want to save money so I can move back up here (New York) within a year hopefully. I’d love to continue to take classes at Stella Adler when I’m back in New York but for the year I’m at home, I hope to find an agent and get some extra work on films in the area as well as maybe audition for some shows around the Upstate.” Landrum is from Boiling Springs and is a 2004 graduate of Boiling Springs High School.
