The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation Invests In USC Upstate Scholarship

09- 25- 2009

Spartanburg, S.C. - The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation has made a significant contribution to its previously established endowed scholarship within the George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business & Economics at the University of South Carolina Upstate. The scholarship was initially created in 1999 but updated with new criteria and award amount in 2009.

Foundation ContributionAccording to Bea Walters Smith, director of development and foundation scholarships at USC Upstate, The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation is the first to make an additional gift to an already established scholarship fund at the University.

“Wachovia has been a partner to USC Upstate over the years and its participation in the Johnson College building project and a sizable investment to the scholarship fund is greatly appreciated,” said Smith. This is a significant step forward as we move closer to opening the George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business & Economics in downtown Spartanburg. A facility of that magnitude will attract many more students, some of whom will need the assistance of scholarship funds. We want to be in the position to be prepared to accommodate the increase in student enrollment and request for scholarship.”

Ethan Burroughs, Spartanburg Market President for Wachovia, knows about the cost of tuition and the importance of earning a strong education. "The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation has a strong focus on supporting education and we are proud to support this scholarship fund. We know that the students of today are tomorrow’s future leaders. They’ll compromise our workforce and help define our economy. A college education helps ensure students receive the necessary skills and knowledge needed for success, both in business and life.”

Criteria for the Wachovia Scholarship include a student who has earned 90 USC Upstate credit hours with a 3.0 GPA, declared major in the Johnson College of Business and Economics, and preference is given to a student from Spartanburg, Union or Cherokee County.
