Penny And Michael Meilinger Receive USC Upstate Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award
Spartanburg, S.C. -
The University of South Carolina Upstate Alumni Association will present the 2009 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year to both Penny D. Meilinger and Michael E. Meilinger at the Convocation Honoring December Graduates on Tuesday, December 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. Criteria for the Distinguished Alumni Award include outstanding career accomplishments, service to local community and the University
Penny, a 1992 graduate, and Michael, a 1993 graduate, both received degrees in business administration from USC Upstate and have held various jobs in the accounting field.
Penny worked first at Elliot, Davis and Co. in Greenville and then worked her way to assistant controller of the development company at The Cliffs At Glassy. After seven years there, she left to home school her children and to serve as the office manager for Mike’s various business ventures.
Mike worked as a staff accountant at Deloitte & Touche and as an assistant controller for Kusters in Spartanburg. After three years, he decided to venture out on his own. He began his own CPA practice out of his home, entered a partnership with a fellow CPA, and then branched off to become the majority partner at his own firm. In 2006, Mike sold that practice and started Meilinger Consulting P.C., a specialized accounting firm focusing on forensic accounting, litigation support, divorce accounting, and business valuation based in Greenville, S.C. In August 2009, Mike, along with a partner, opened Advantage Sales and Consulting, a health care sales and consulting company that has employees in 16 states and the District of Columbia. Mike serves as Chief Financial Officer. In December 2009, Mike also started the Meilinger Group, P.C., a CPA firm specializing in small business tax planning and minimization, cost containment, and accounting outsourcing. In addition to the CPA designation, Mike has also received his CMA Certified in Management Accounting, CFP Certified Financial Planner, ABV Accredited in Business Valuation, CFFA Certified Forensic Financial Analyst, CFF Certified Financial Forensics.
“During the years that Penny and Mike Meilinger have been raising their family and building their careers, they have remained loyal supporters of USC Upstate, sharing their good fortune so that current college students have an opportunity to advance in the business field,” said Leah Anderson, director of alumni relations, annual giving and university events at USC Upstate. “The Meilinger’s are role models in their success story and their steadfast commitment to their alma mater.”
According to Anderson, the couple has established two scholarships through the USC Upstate Foundation that are very meaningful.
The Arthur T. Meilinger Endowed Scholarship was established in April 2006. It is awarded annually to a full-time rising senior with a major in business. The recipient is required to be a South Carolina resident, who is employed at least 25 hours at a job while obtaining their education at USC Upstate while maintaining a 3.0 GPA.
The Stuart Shough Accounting Scholarship was established in November 2008 in honor of an accounting professor who teaches at the USC Upstate Greenville Campus. The Meilinger’s are challenging other alumni to donate to this scholarship fund to bring it to its endowment level. When fully endowed, the Stuart Shough Accounting Scholarship will be awarded to a senior who has completed 90 hours of study, maintained a 3.25 GPA in accounting classes and a 3.75 GPA in the major, and plans to pursue a master’s degree in accounting from Clemson University.
