J.C. Stroble Foundation to Host Screening Event
Spartanburg, S.C. - On Thursday, April 15 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the J.C. Stroble Glaucoma Awareness Foundation will host a community outreach event in the lobby of the G.B. Hodge Building at the University of South Carolina Upstate.
The Disability Health Awareness Fair will feature information about disability services from other colleges in the area, such as Spartanburg Community College, and Sherman Chiropractic. There will be free screenings for glaucoma and eye exams, as well as other health checks. The staff of Dr. Jakubchak from the Spartanburg Eye Clinic will perform the glaucoma screenings and will offer information on the latest corrective eye surgical procedures.
The USC Upstate chapter of the Lions Club will have donation boxes available for used eyeglasses. There will also be staff from Sherman Chiropractic to offer stress relief exercises. There will be door prizes, free food, and the famous Beacon ice tea. JC Stroble, the man known for 50 years as the “call it out!” order-taker at the Beacon Restaurant in Spartanburg, and who is legally blind because of glaucoma, will be at the event, which is open to the public. All screenings are free, however, donations are appreciated.
Several music acts will be performing throughout the event, including USC Upstate student Clifton Reeves of GRisen performing rap as well as students from the South Carolina School of Deaf and Blind.
The focus of the J.C. Stroble Glaucoma Awareness Foundation is ultimately to decrease the number of people with undiagnosed glaucoma by promoting early detection, assisting patients in finding proper medical care for glaucoma, educating the public on glaucoma and other ocular conditions, and overcoming existing health disparities in our community.
