Spartanburg, S.C. - The University of South Carolina Upstate is committed to holding May Commencement outdoors. However, in the event of severe weather, the Commencement ceremony will move to the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium, located in downtown Spartanburg.
The decision to implement the severe weather plan will be made by 12:00 noon the day of commencement. Involved parties will be informed of this decision by the following communication methods:
USC Upstate Web site: any relocation announcements will be located on the homepage of the USC Upstate Web site (www.uscupstate.edu) by no later than 12:15p.m. the day of commencement.
The graduation web site (www.uscupstate.edu/graduation) includes additional severe weather information including: tickets, parking, driving directions and FAQs.
Mass Email: students, faculty and staff will be sent an email announcing the change of venue by no later than 12:15p.m. the day of commencement
Electronic Message Boards: campus and highway electronic signage will announce venue changes
Switchboard: The university switchboard operator will have all relevant information for those wishing to call campus (864-503-5000) for inclement weather announcements
TV/Radio: Select media outlets will be asked to communicate any severe weather announcements
The ceremony time would remain the same and would begin at 7:00 p.m. (Processionals would begin at 6:40 p.m.). Graduates would report no later than 6:00 p.m. to the arena of the auditorium.
New Ticket Requirement
Due to the limited space of an indoor ceremony and the growing number of graduates, tickets will be required for an indoor ceremony.
Graduates will be given six (6) tickets in total: three (3) tickets for the auditorium and three (3) tickets to the arena (the lower level of the auditorium). Live video streaming via the web will also be available for those without a ticket or not able to attend.
The three (3) auditorium tickets provide guests a live viewing of commencement. The three (3) arena tickets (located in the lower level of the auditorium) allows guest to view the live video of the event. The doors to the arena for the live video viewing will be open by 6:40 p.m. prior to the 7:00 p.m. ceremony.
Graduation tickets will all be General Admission seating. Each graduate will be issued a set number of tickets. Lost tickets cannot be replaced. All persons attending must have a ticket.
- Tickets will be available beginning Monday April 19, 2010 in the HPAC Box Office during the hours of 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Students will be required to show their student ID card and sign for the tickets.
- Students MUST pick up their tickets by Monday, May 3, 2010 at 5:00 p.m.
- If there are any unclaimed or extra tickets, one (1) additional ticket will be available on a first come, first served basis on Tuesday, May 4th from 9:30 - 11:30 p.m. and from 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. in the HPAC Box Office. Students must again show their student ID and sign for the additional tickets.
Students taking classes on the Greenville campus can request tickets through the USC Upstate Office in Greenville Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. beginning April 19, 2010. Within one week of making the request, the tickets will be sent from the main campus to the USC Upstate, Greenville Campus office and students can sign for and pick up their tickets. Students will be required to show their student ID card. The last day ticket requests can be made at the Greenville Campus is Friday, April 30, 2010. After this date, students must pick up tickets on the main campus as outlined above.
Participating faculty will gather in the arena of the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium no later than 6:30 p.m. dressed in full academic regalia. Faculty members do not need tickets. Academic regalia will serve as their ticket. The faculty should be ready to process at 6:50 p.m.
