10- 20- 2006

mock trial winnersSpartanburg, S.C. -- The Mock Trial team at the University of South Carolina Upstate began the season on a strong note by earning two awards for Outstanding Attorney at the nation’s first tournament hosted at USC Upstate on October 13 and 14. The USC Upstate Invitational was sponsored by the Spartanburg law firm of Harrison, White, Smith and Coggins. Teams attending this year’s tournament included Duke, Furman, Davidson, Campbell, USC Columbia, Bob Jones, and Georgia Tech.

USC Upstate teammates Stephen Corby and Justin Pugh were each recognized for the outstanding quality of their performance at the Corby was the only attorney at the tournament to qualify for the outstanding attorney designation on both the plaintiff’s and defense side of the case.

“The tournament was particularly competitive this year so the job Justin and Stephen did is even more impressive,” said Dr. Kevin Sargent, director of forensics at USC Upstate. “We fell a couple ballots short of a team award but we are happy with how things look for the rest of the year. We have several new team members and once they get more experience under their belt they will be a force to be reckoned with.”

Other USC Upstate students participating in the tournament included Eric Von Kleist, Ali Aikins, Jessica Lovins, Chris Mathis, Zach Dyer, Ben Womick, Erin Mortimer, Sharon Kelley, Doug Taylor, Caroline Sullivan, Elisha Roden, and James Hicks.  Additional students played supporting roles in helping to make the tournament a success.  The Upstate legal community provided a great deal of support for this year’s event with many serving as judges.

“More than 35 of the state’s best attorneys were on the USC Upstate campus and it was a great opportunity to show off the caliber of our students and the qualities of our facilities,” said Sargent.

The USC Upstate Mock Trial team heads to the Middle Tennessee State Invitational in November.  For more details, contact Dr. Kevin Sargent at 864-503-5645 or ksargent@uscupstate.edu.
